TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 13, 2019) - The Salt Lake Community College baseball team will return to the diamond this week, albeit with a different schedule than what they had planned.
The Bruins annually host a Valentine's Day game but this season, SLCC will not due to expected inclement weather that has affected the ability of the Cate Field facility to be ready for play. Instead, Salt Lake will also only one day of its expected four-game series with the Utah State University club team and that will be played on Friday at the Larry H. Miller Field complex at Brigham Young University in Provo. The four-game series will be shortened to include a three-game day.Â
In spite of the weather-related adversity, Bruins coach D.G. Nelson said this week's games will present several opportunities for his team to improve.
"We are getting healthier by the day and it will be huge for us to get out and play," he said. "Mother Nature isn't cooperating much, but we have a solid group that will take shape and will be exciting to watch as we get healthy and play more games."
SLCC lost four games to traditionally-strong South Mountain Community College two weeks ago, being outscored 43-15. Still, after two weeks of practice that has further integrated 14 freshmen into the roster, the Bruins are excited for the opportunities to get a series of games together to provide further consistency. Several Salt Lake players did start strong in St. George, with
Alex Bumpus posting a .400 average in 10 at-bats and
Jaxson Otis holding a .357 average in 14 at-bats, posting five hits with one double.
The SLCC Athletics website, www.slccbruins.com, will be updated as the team schedule is updated.
