Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 26, 2019) - Another spirited performance by an opponent sent the No. 15 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team to their second conference loss of the season Saturday.
In a game against longtime in-state foe Snow College, the Bruins fell 71-52 in a game that Snow controlled thanks to prolonged runs of success. The Badgers outscored SLCC 24-12 in the second quarter, building a lead that proved to be insurmountable for Salt Lake. The loss drops SLCC's overall record to 18-4 and 4-2 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
"We ran into a red-hot Snow College team, who played with a ton of heart and confidence," said SLCC coach
Betsy Specketer. "As well as they played offensively, they were equally tough defensively."
It was Salt Lake who held the early lead, powering to a 12-9 advantage after the opening quarter. However, Snow went on a run in the second quarter, shooting 75 percent from the field and making 5-of-6 three-point shots to take a 33-24 lead into halftime. While SLCC was able to cut the deficit slightly going into the final period, Snow catapulted to the win thanks to a lock-down defensive effort in the fourth quarter.
SLCC shot just 35.3 percent in the game (18-of-51), compared to Snow's 57.4 percent (27-of-47). Salt Lake also made just 7-of-18 three-point shots in the game, compared to a 14-of-25 performance for Snow.
Miki'ala Maio led Salt Lake with a game-high 18 points, with
Emma Villas-Gomis scoring 12 points. SLCC forward
Lauren Gustin finished with 7 points.
Salt Lake will travel once again next week for a game against an in-state opponent, traveling to play at USU Eastern on Thursday. The Bruins will return to the Lifetime Activities Center on Saturday for a game against Southern Idaho to close out the second round of league play.Â
