Bruins hopeful to get back on track this week

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 23, 2019) - The Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team started the 2018-19 season on a hot-streak, entering Scenic West Athletic Conference play with a record of 13-3.

Since entering league play, Salt Lake has seen a bit of a cooling trend, with a 2-2 record that featured close losses to Snow College and USU Eastern at home. Still, as the Bruins prepare to open up the second round of league play on Thursday against Colorado Northwestern, SLCC coach Todd Phillips said his team will have to be focused on getting back-to-basics.

"We're excited to get back on the court this week," he said. "We've had a few days to focus on some different tasks and to look at how we can improve as a team. I'm excited to see our guys perform this week."

The Bruins are scheduled to play Colorado Northwestern on Thursday inside the Lifetime Activities Center, with a game on Saturday against in-state rival Snow College. Salt Lake earned a narrow 95-88 overtime victory against CNCC on Jan. 10, the first of three SLCC games that finished regulation play with a margin of two points-or-less. Salt Lake fell at home to Snow, 92-90, on Jan. 12

The Scenic West standings currently sit with Snow and USU Eastern leading at 3-1, with Salt Lake and Southern Idaho at 2-2. Salt Lake will play Snow on Saturday, with matchup at USU Eastern on Jan. 31.

Phillips said the time is now for his team to lockdown on their earlier struggles and build for the remainder of the season.

"Our team understands the level of play they have to match to be successful," he said. "We have a lot of season left to showcase our growth as a program."

Thursday's home game against Colorado Northwestern will start at 7:30, with Saturday's road game at Snow College starting at 5:00 p.m. Salt Lake's next scheduled home game is on February 2 against Southern Idaho.
