No. 15 SLCC Womens Basketball full of momentum heading into week

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 22, 2019) - Competitive success in almost any activity can usually be boiled down to one word - momentum.

Fortunately for the No. 15 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team, momentum is exactly what they have as they enter the second round of Scenic West Athletic Conference play with a three-game winning streak. Since losing the league opener to Southern Idaho, the Bruins have rattled off three impressive victories, including a gutsy overtime performance against in-state rival Snow College.

Boasting a 17-3 overall record and a 3-1 league record, Bruins coach Betsy Specketer said her team is now better aware of the challenges they face.

"The second round of conference play is always a challenge, with everyone now having scouts and firsthand experience on team and player tendencies," she said. "Our second round schedule is especially challenging with two huge road games coming up."

Specketer's inferences at Salt Lake's upcoming schedule are indeed correct, with in-state rival Snow College populating the schedule on Saturday. The Bruins will also face off against Colorado Northwestern at home on Thursday to open the second round.

In preview of both teams, Colorado Northwestern started league play off at 0-4, with the program currently on an eight-game losing streak. Salt Lake earned an 83-45 road victory over the Spartans on Jan. 10. In contrast, Snow sits at 2-2 in league play, with the Bruins having earned a 71-64 overtime home win over the Badgers on Jan. 12.

With Saturday's game being played at Snow, Specketer said her team will have to be aware of the challenges that await them.

"Snow is a great team and is always super tough on their home court," she said. "Our focus is to obviously just keep improving as a team and building on what we've learned from the first round of play."

Thursday's game against Colorado Northwestern will start at 5:30 p.m. inside the Lifetime Activites Center, while Saturday's game at Snow is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. tip. Salt Lake's next home game is scheduled for February 2 against Southern Idaho.
