Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 10, 2019) - After a disappointing loss last weekend to open league play, the No. 17 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team was hoping for a rebound in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
The Bruins earned that rebound in a big way, picking up a dominant 83-45 victory over Colorado Northwestern Community College on the road. The victory moves Salt Lake's overall record to 15-3, while boosting their league record to 1-1.
SLCC never trailed in the game, taking a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. The Bruins went on a 23-6 scoring run in the second quarter, holding a commanding 43-18 lead at halftime. Defense played a large role in Salt Lake's dominance, as the Bruins held CNCC to just 33.3 percent shooting for the game from the field.
Lauren Gustin had another outstanding game individually for Salt Lake, finishing with 23 points and 8 rebounds.
Emma Villas-Gomis finished with 17 points and made 4-of-4 three-point attempts.
Dixie Lainhart finished with 12 points off the bench.
Bruins coach
Betsy Specketer said the win was a positive sign for Salt Lake's ability to overcome adversity.
"One of our keys tonight was to guard, both individually and as a team, so I was really pleased with our defensive effort," she said. "It was also good to see (Villas-Gomis) have a breakout game shooting-wise, and Lauren (Gustin) was her usual solid self in running the floor and controlling the paint."
Salt Lake will hold its league home-opener on Saturday, hosting in-state rival Snow College. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. inside the Lifetime Activities Center, with live stats available on www.slccbruins.com.Â
