Salt Lake falls to Southern Nevada in Region 18 opener

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 10, 2018) - A pair of early runs lifted the College of Southern Nevada to a first-round victory over Salt Lake Community College in the Region 18 baseball tournament.

The Coyotes were able to score early, helping themselves in a second-round matchup with top-seeded College of Southern Idaho Friday, thanks to a 2-1 victory over Salt Lake. Meanwhile, the Bruins will play in a game on Friday at 3:30 p.m., with a probable matchup against USU Eastern.

Southern Nevada got on the board in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead. The Coyotes stretched the lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning, with the pitchers' duel extending on both sides. Salt Lake got on the board in the ninth inning, with a Tyler Dean home run lifting the Bruins within a run. However, Salt Lake was unable to lift itself to the victory, sending SLCC to the losers' side of the bracket.

The game featured strong pitching performances, with Southern Nevada's Joey O'Brien throwing eight scoreless innings to earn the win. Salt Lake's Fynn Chester took the loss, surrendering two runs in 5.2 innings of action. Chester and SLCC reliever Jesse Parker threw a combined 15 strikeouts, with Chester throwing 8 strikeouts. 

The Region 18 baseball tournament is a double-elimination tournament.
