Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 6, 2018) - Grit, determination, confidence.
Those are the qualities the Salt Lake Community College baseball program is striving for as of late, and those are the qualities the Bruins are showing on the field. Salt Lake knew a strong challenge was ahead in a home series with the leader of the Scenic West Athletic Conference, the College of Southern Idaho. The Bruins rose to the challenge, taking 3-of-4 games from CSI in the series and sweeping Friday's doubleheader, 6-5 and 11-4.
Salt Lake will play its next five games against in-state rival USU Eastern, with a four-game series that will count towards league standings starting next Friday in Price. The remaining game of the set will be a non-league game.Â
Salt Lake 6, Southern Idaho 5: SLCCÂ earned a game one victory thanks to a late pitching save.
Trailing 6-2 entering the final frame, Southern Idaho was able to cut the deficit to one run with the bases loaded. However, relief pitcher
Parker Hall entered to pick up the game one save. After CSI led 2-0 early, Salt Lake scored six unanswered runs to take its lead.
The Bruins got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, with a
Tyler Dean solo home run bringing Salt Lake within a run. Salt Lake scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Dean giving the Bruins a 6-2 lead on an RBI single to center. The rally started with a
Nick Seginowich single, followed up by a
Damian Henderson RBI single.
Payton Freeman had a two-RBI double that scored Seginowich and Henderson.
Dean went 2-of-2 at the plate, with Henderson and
Jaxson Otis going 2-of-3 at the plate.Â
Salt Lake 11, Southern Idaho 4: The Bruins took off early offensively, never looking back in the controlling win.
Salt Lake scored four runs in the opening frame, with an
Alex Johnson RBI double scoring two runs to give SLCC a 4-0 lead. While Southern Idaho would counter in the second with an RBI single, the Bruins would power in the fifth inning with a
Tyler Dean RBI double.Â
With SLCC holding a 7-4 lead entering the eighth inning, Salt Lake erupted for five runs to take a commanding lead. Interestingly, the Bruins managed only one hit in the inning as a series of walks and sacrifices helped SLCC earn its keep on the scoreboard. Salt Lake finished with 13 hits and 9 walks.
Jason James earned the victory on the mound for Salt Lake, spreading six hits over seven innings of work. James surrendered two earned runs and two walks, striking out five in the process.Â
