Salt Lake bests CSN in SWAC doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 27, 2018) - Some home cooking was just what the Salt Lake Community College baseball team needed.

After not playing at Cate Field since April 6, the Bruins returned home with fervor, downing the College of Southern Nevada in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader by scores of 5-2 and 5-4. The records move Salt Lake's overall record to 29-13 and the SWAC record to 17-9.

The Bruins and Coyotes will play a league doubleheader on Saturday. Game one at Cate Field will start at 12:00 p.m. 

Salt Lake 5, Southern Nevada 2: Bruins pitcher Fynn Chester threw a complete game on the mound, spreading out five hits over seven innings to give Salt Lake the victory.

After surrendering two runs in the top of the first inning, Salt Lake held Southern Nevada scoreless, with Chester striking out two Coyotes. The Bruins' offense posted a run in the second inning, starting a streak of three consecutive innings of scoring. Damian Henderson scored in the second inning on a fielder's choice, with Nick Seginowich's RBI single in the third inning tying the game. Salt Lake took a 3-2 lead later in the inning as Colton Moore stole home.

SLCC's Alex Bumpas started the scoring in the fourth inning with an RBI single that scored Henderson. Brady Brook's RBI single came later in the fourth inning.

Henderson finished the day going 2-of-3 at the plate, scoring two runs. 

Salt Lake 5, Southern Nevada 4: A dramatic, come-from-behind win helped the Bruins to the doubleheader sweep.

Trailing 4-3 entering the ninth inning, Salt Lake tied the game on a Tyler Dean RBI double. Then, with two outs in the inning, Quinn Ayers hit an RBI single to walkoff in dramatic fashion. The game was a series of back-and-forth motions, with Salt Lake leading 3-0 early before Southern Nevada lifted to the lead.

Nick Seginowich had a two-RBI single in the third inning to get Salt Lake on the board, while Alex Johnson followed it up with a RBI single to give Salt Lake a lead. Southern Nevada scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning and the eighth inning, giving CSN a 4-3 lead entering the final frame.

Jayden Hartle earned the pitching victory for the Bruins, striking out two batters in 1.1 innings of work. Ben Weese started the game, allowing three hits in 5.1 innings.
