Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 31, 2018) - The Salt Lake Community College baseball program has found momentum at the right time.
The Bruins entered a four-game home series against Colorado Northwestern below. 500 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, with the hopes of using home-field advantage to gain some much needed energy heading into the home stretch of the regular season. Consider that goal accomplished as SLCCÂ swept Colorado Northwestern at Cate Field, sweeping Saturday's doubleheader to move to 9-7 in the league standings.
Salt Lake will host league-leading College of Southern Idaho in a four-game series next weekend at Cate Field.
Salt Lake 5, Colorado Northwestern 1: The Bruins scored three runs in the first inning, using the early momentum to power past the Spartans.
Payton Freeman's two-RBI single in the first inning got the Bruins on the board as
Nick Seginowich and
Colton Moore scored. Then
Alex Johnson's RBI single scored Freeman. Seginowich's RBI single in the fourth inning stretched Salt Lake's lead to 4-0.
While the Bruin offense was a highlight, the real gem of the game came courtesy of SLCC pitcher
Fynn Chester who threw his first complete game to earn the victory on the mound. Chester struck out six Spartans in the game, surrendering just one earned run and four hits. The victory moves Chester's season record to 3-0 on the mound.
Johnson and
Tyler Dean led the Bruins offensively, going 2-of-3 in the game. Freeman batted in two runs.Â
Salt Lake 11, Colorado Northwestern 2: Salt Lake earned a run-rule victory to finish the series sweep of Colorado Northwestern in impressive fashion.
Jaxson Otis hit a walk-off inside-the-park home run to end the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, with Salt Lake leading 9-2. The Bruins scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead, with a two-RBI
Damian Henderson single giving SLCC the advantage. Henderson followed it up with a three-run home run in the fourth inning to extend Salt Lake's lead to 7-1.
Henderson finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate, batting home six runs in the process. SLCC catcher
Domenick Fuller also went 3-of-4 at the plate.
Jason James earned the pitching victory for Salt Lake, throwing six innings of two-run ball while hanging eight strikeouts. Â
