TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 7, 2018) - The last time the No. 6 Salt Lake Community College Bruins left the floor of the Lifetime Activities Center, the Wasatch Front was still facing an approaching snow storm.
Much has changed since that January 18 game against Colorado Northwestern, which ended in an 89-71 victory for Salt Lake. Not only has the Salt Lake Valley experienced record-high temperatures but the Bruins have had to experience the frailty of life-on-the-road, including the dangers of playing opponents who are planning to take advantage of fatigue.Â
This week will bring an end to Salt Lake's long sojourn, as the Bruins prepare to play in a two-game Scenic West Athletic Conference slate that will include another road game at Colorado Northwestern, followed by a long-awaited home game against Snow College. Salt Lake was able to sweep its action last week, earning a thrilling victory over Southern Idaho Thursday and another impressive win over Snow College Saturday.
Salt Lake coach
Todd Phillips said his team is in a good frame-of-mind as they prepare for another week of league action.
"We had a really good week last week and are hoping to ride that momentum into the last part of the season," he said.Â
The Bruins open the week Thursday with a game against the aforementioned Spartans. Besides the blowout win over CNCCÂ on Jan. 18, the Bruins have enjoyed success over the Spartans in the last few seasons. CNCC is just 8-15 overall and 1-6 in league play, with its lone victory coming against Snow College in an 82-80 victory.
While SLCC has successfully distinguished itself in wins over CNCC, Saturday's in-state foe has proved to be different as Snow College has been a traditionally tough foe. Additionally, Salt Lake's narrow margins of victory over Snow (83-77 and 84-73) has shown the legitimacy of the Badger program. Snow is 12-11 overall and 2-5 in the Scenic West.Â
Phillips said the Badgers are always a tough foe to prepare for.
"We have a few injuries but our depth will be key," he said. "Hopefully our depth will carry us through against a good in-state opponent."
The Bruins continue to control the SWAC title race, as Salt Lake sits as the league leader at 6-1. Southern Idaho is a half-game behind, at 6-2, but the Bruins successfully swept CSI in regular-season play to earn a tie-breaking edge.
Thursday's road game at Colorado Northwestern will tip at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's home game against Snow College will start at 5:00 p.m. Live stats will be available at slccbruins.com, while live streaming will be available at live.ksl.com.Â
