Bruins focused on final game of regular season

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 23, 2018) - The Salt Lake Community College Bruins had a variety of goals when they started the 2017-18 season back in October.

One of those goals can be accomplished with a win in Saturday's regular-season finale - the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular-season title. The Bruins remain tied atop the league standings with the College of Southern Idaho, with both programs having identical records of 9-2. What isn't identical for both teams though is their record against each other, as Salt Lake holds a 2-1 edge over CSI in the season series. If Salt Lake earns a win this Saturday against Colorado Northwestern, the Bruins will clinch the top seed in next week's Region 18 tournament, along with the SWAC regular-season title.

All of these marks aren't lost on Bruins coach Todd Phillips, who had a team that was at a crossroads before last Saturday's home game against USU Eastern. The Bruins, who'd rolled through the season and through most of the Scenic West, fell to CSI in an overtime battle, dropping them into a tie with the Golden Eagles at the top of the league standings. If Salt Lake lost to USU Eastern - who'd beaten SLCC already - the Bruins would need help to clinch the league title; fortunately, Salt Lake powered to a dominating 83-69 victory.

Phillips said Saturday's win over USU Eastern was critical to the team.

This Saturday's game against CNCC will be just as critical, as Salt Lake needs the win to earn the tiebreaker over CSI. Salt Lake has blown by the Spartans in each of their matchups, earning victories of 89-71 and 92-63 to hold a 2-0 edge this season.

Saturday's home game will also serve as "Sophomore Night", as the Bruins honor Bushmen Ebet, Christian Gray, Dalven Brushier, Alec Monson, Kur Kuath and Isaiah Wright. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m., with live streaming on live.ksl.com. Live stats for the game will be available at www.slccbruins.com.
