TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 21, 2018) - All the Salt Lake Community College Bruins can do after this Saturday is play who they're scheduled to play next, regardless of the time, day or situation.
After all, after Saturday's regular-season finale against Colorado Northwestern Community College, the Bruins will be entering the postseason - a journey that will begin on March 1 at the Region 18 tournament in Ephraim. SLCC has fought long-and-hard through a daunting preseason schedule and an always-tough Scenic West Athletic Conference, bringing their record to 9-2 in league play after Saturday's win over USU Eastern.
All that lies ahead for the Bruins to be SWAC regular season champions now is to earn a victory over Colorado Northwestern, guaranteeing them no worse than a tie with rival Snow College for the top spot. Fortunately for SLCC, the Bruins have a 2-1 season-series edge over the Badgers, a mark that could come in handy when it comes to tourney seeding.
With all of that said though, Salt Lake coach
Betsy Specketer said her team has done an outstanding job responding to continual adversity.
"I'm so proud of our group," she said. "We really challenged them after the loss to Snow and they answered that challenge with two huge wins this weekend. I thought we came out with a ton of energy and enthusiasm, and the fast start led to some of the best basketball we've played all year."
The Bruins have handled the Spartans in both matchups this season, including in a 85-45 handling on Feb. 8 and a 90-49 victory in Salt Lake on January 18. Salt Lake's
Tia Hay scored 23 points in the first game and 18 points in the second matchup, leading all scorers both times.
Specketer said CNCC will present another opportunity to fine-tune heading into the postseason.Â
"We're looking forward to wrapping up our fifth consecutive SWAC championship with another win this Saturday on 'Sophomore Night'," she said.Â
Saturday's game tips off at 5:00 p.m. in the Lifetime Activities Center, with live stats available at www.slccbruins.com. Live streaming will be available at live.ksl.com.Â
