TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 24, 2018) - If there was a roadmap the 2018 Salt Lake Community College women's soccer program created in preseason training camp, the Bruins most certainly are right where they wanted to be.
SLCC's national ranking is up to No. 10 this week, thanks to earning the program's first-ever Scenic West Athletic Conference championship. While the Bruins tied with Snow College in the final standings, a tiebreaker sent them to the top seed in this weekend's Region 18 championships and the hosting rights for the event at Zions Bank Stadium. Now, the goal for the Bruins is to continue to keep the momentum going.
"We are excited beyond measure by hosting this year's Region 18 championships," said SLCCÂ coach
Mark Davis. "Our players have worked hard and persevered through many difficult stretches. Our program is ready to take advantage of these opportunities."
The three-match championships will start with a pair of semifinal matches on Friday, followed up by the championship match on Saturday. No. 2 Snow and No. 3 USU Eastern will play the semifinal match at 11:00 a.m. Friday, with No. 1 Salt Lake and No. 4 Southern Nevada battling at 3:00 p.m. in Herriman.Â
Salt Lake went 3-0 against Southern Nevada during the season, shutting them out in each match to finish with a combined victory margin of 10-0. The Coyotes finished the season with a record of 7-7-1, going 1-7-1 in league play.
While the Bruins have had considerable success against CSN throughout the regular season, Davis said the postseason will bring a different wrinkle to the rivalry.
"Southern Nevada is a program that will always bring their absolute best to the table," he said. "Our players will be aware of the multiple challenges they will present, along with the style-of-play they try to dictate. Friday's match will take a high level of focus from our players."
If the Bruins win, they will advance to Saturday's championship match, which will be played at 1:00 p.m. The Region 18 men's championship is also being hosted by Salt Lake Community College.Â
