Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 6, 2018) - All season long, the Salt Lake Community College Bruins have won just about every way imaginable - by big margins, small margins, blowouts and tight games.
The Bruins hadn't received an overtime game yet this season but they found a way to win that contest as well, earning a 124-111 triple-overtime road victory over USU Eastern to open Scenic West play. Salt Lake's season record moved to 18-1 and 1-0 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
USU Eastern had a big lead after the first half, leading 46-34 after shooting 51.5 percent in the first half (17-of-33). Salt Lake had a tougher time early, making just 2-of-10 three-point shots and shooting only 38.7 percent in the first half. However, the Bruins clamped down defensively in the second half, holding the Eagles to only 30 percent shooting and just 3-of-15 from three-point range, after USU Eastern shot 56.3 percent from long distance in the first half.
The overtimes were back-and-forth affairs, with the Bruins finally outscoring a depleted Eagles squad 19-6 in the final period. SLCC limited USU Eastern to 2-of-9 shooting in the third overtime, while making 6 of their own 8 shots. The Bruins also repeatedly took advantage of turnovers in the game, earning a 22-10 edge in turnovers.
Salt Lake's
Jordan Gilliam had a career night, finishing with 35 points and 11 rebounds. The Bruins had a total of five double-digit scorers, with
Christian Gray contributing 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Josh Colon and
Alec Monson both contributed 16 points, with
Kur Kuath finishing with 13 points.
The Bruins will play their Scenic West home opener Thursday, Jan. 11, with a titanic early-season matchup with College of Southern Idaho.
