Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 27, 2017) - A tough night was bound to happen to the No. 4 Salt Lake Community College Bruins.
After all, with the way the Bruins ran out to a 4-0 start in Scenic West Athletic Conference play, there was bound to be a time when it didn't work out. Unfortunately for Salt Lake, that night came Saturday as the Bruins opened the second round of SWAC play with a game at USU Eastern. The Bruins fell to the Eagles, 83-79, to fall to 4-1 in Scenic West play.
Salt Lake trailed 46-33 at halftime, as USU Eastern shot 54.8 percent from the floor (17-of-31) and 54.5 percent from three-point range (54.5 percent). Conversely, the Bruins made only 3-of-17 three-point attempts on the night.
While it may have appeared to be a dire situation, SLCC powered to a strong second half, outscoring USU Eastern 46-37 in the period. Unfortunately, the comeback attempt proved to be too-little, too-late as Salt Lake ran out of time in spite of tying the game late.
"We came out low on energy early on and dug ourselves a hole," said SLCC coach
Todd Phillips. "We didn't have enough fire power to make more shots."
Kur Kuath led the Bruins with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Christian Gray contributed 16 points and 8 rebounds, while
Alec Monson put up 14 points and 8 rebounds.
Jordan Gilliam finished with 11 points.
The Bruins will return to the court on February 1 for a road game at Southern Idaho, with a game against Snow College on Feb. 3. Salt Lake's next home game is scheduled for Feb. 10.
