No. 10 Salt Lake prepared to begin second round of league play

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 24, 2018) - The No. 10 Salt Lake Community College Bruins took their lumps during the first part of league play.

Playing most of their schedule on the road, the Bruins managed their way to a 3-1 record in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, with their only blemish being a disappointing home loss to Southern Idaho. Salt Lake earned close road wins against in-state rivals USU Eastern and Snow College, then finished Thursday with a 90-49 blowout victory over Colorado Northwestern.

While Salt Lake's 3-1 league mark and 17-4 overall record has many people that are associated with the program excited, Bruins coach Betsy Specketer said she is trying to balance that success with the unusual schedule ahead that the Bruins are facing.

"We play everyone on the road the second time through, so we'll have to see what we are made of," she said.

Yes, the Bruins are playing their next four games on the road. They'll start the road swing on Saturday at USU Eastern, with a game time scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Then the Bruins will play back-to-back road games, first on February 1 at Southern Idaho and then Feb. 3 at Snow College. Salt Lake will travel to Colorado Northwestern on  Feb. 8 before returning home on Feb. 10 to host Snow.

There will be several road challenges ahead, but this weekend's game in Price against USU Eastern is especially critical. The Bruins earned a 62-56 victory over the Eagles to open league play on Jan. 6, but the challenge of facing a team the second time isn't lost on Specketer.

"We have to refocus our efforts for the second run-through of the league schedule," she said. "Every team has a scouting of us now, meaning they will try to take away what we like to do. Our success in the first round will mean very little if we don't back it up with a quality run in the second part of the league schedule."

USU Eastern enters Saturday's game with a record of 1-3 in league play, having dropped games to all but Colorado Northwestern. Still, the Eagles are averaging 69 points-per-game in league play to lead the Scenic West, a mark that shouldn't be overlooked. Additionally, the Eagles' Madison Loftus is third in scoring in league games, averaging 15.3 points a game.

The Bruins' game Saturday will tip at 3:00 p.m. Coverage of the game will be available on the USU Eastern website.
