TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 16, 2018) - The Salt Lake Community College Bruins have had plenty of ups during the 2017-18 season, with a few downs mixed into the season at various times.
Thursday night's disappointing home loss to Southern Idaho was a definite down, but the Bruins responded with a strong up in Saturday's road win over in-state rival Snow College. SLCC's road victory moved its record to 16-4 and 2-1 in league play, meaning the Bruins are tied for the league lead with CSI. All of the goals the Bruins want to accomplish are still in front of them, a fact that has SLCC coach
Betsy Specketer excited for the coming days.
"Saturday's win (over Snow) was a huge road win for us, especially after the disappointing loss at home on Thursday," she said. "We made some really big offensive plays down the stretch to secure that win and our defense was solid for the entire game."
In order to continue their upward climb, Salt Lake will have to successfully fend off Scenic West rival Colorado Northwestern Thursday, a team that has had its struggles throughout the 2017-18 season. The Spartans are only 2-17 on the season, and are 0-2 in league play. Colorado Northwestern's only wins this season have come against Little Big Horn College and Western Wyoming Community College, with its league losses coming to Southern Idaho and USU Eastern.
The Spartans are last in the league in scoring offense, averaging just 57.3 points a game, and last in scoring defense, surrendering 63.3 points a game to opponents. The statistics aren't shocking but that doesn't mean the Bruins are concerned with having another solid performance to improve their league standing.
"We're looking forward to getting back home this Thursday and hopefully ending the first round of SWAC play at 3-1," Specketer said.Â
The Bruins and Colorado Northwestern will tip at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, with live stats on www.slccbruins.com and live streaming on live.ksl.com.
