TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (September 14, 2017) – After a weekend of mixed results in southern Idaho, the Salt Lake Community College volleyball program is hoping for a better payout of results in southern Nevada this upcoming weekend.
Â
With a record of 9-3 in tow, the tenth-ranked Bruins will travel to Las Vegas for a tournament hosted by the College of Southern Nevada this upcoming weekend. This will be the fourth consecutive weekend SLCC will play in a tournament, with a scheduled slate of four matches including a matchup against another nationally-ranked program. SLCC is 7-1 in tournaments hosted in Salt Lake, but is just 2-2 on a truly neutral court this season.
Â
The Bruins went 2-2 in the Starr Corporation Invitational, hosted by College of Southern Idaho, last weekend, with wins over Yavapai College and Casper College. SLCC fell in five sets to Monroe Community College and also fell against Hutchinson Community College.
Â
The mixed results leave the Bruins eagerly looking forward to this weekend's action in Las Vegas, SLCC coach
Sue Dulaney said.
Â
"This weekend is the last preseason tournament and we are learning lots of valuable lessons, which will help us prepare for our home opener," she said. "We need to cut down on unforced errors and finish strong."
Â
Salt Lake will play two late-afternoon matches on Friday at CSN's Henderson campus, with matches scheduled against Palomar College and Mira Costa College. The match against Palomar is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and Mira Costa at 5:00 p.m. The Bruins are 1-1 in back-to-back matches this season, falling to Monroe and beating Casper in Saturday's action at CSI.
Â
Next Saturday's matchups will feature another battle for the Bruins against a nationally-ranked foe, with SLCC taking on 11
th-ranked Seward County Community College at 9:00 a.m. Salt Lake will play its final non-conference match against New Mexico Military Institute at 1:00 p.m.
Â
The Bruins are scheduled to begin SWAC play on Sept. 22, as in-state rival Snow College travels to Taylorsville. The Badgers have been nationally-ranked for the season, as have the Bruins.
Â
As for this weekend's action, Dulaney said the Bruins are preparing for several more matches that will prepare them for an incredibly tough SWAC schedule.
Â
"We need to cut down on unforced errors and finish strong," she said. "We're still playing with lineups as our freshman are stepping up."
