TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 27, 2017) – The Salt Lake Community College Men's Basketball program has started the 2017-18 season at 10-0, a mark that has brought the program respect and honor as they continue a march towards the Scenic West.
Â
The Bruins have earned victories over opponents from around the nation, going 2-0 in their most recent tournament action in Salt Lake. Now the challenge for the Bruins is to take advantage of a three-game week that will see SLCC travel to face off against Treasure Valley Community College Monday, before returning home to play Hillcrest Prep Thursday and Williston State College Saturday.
Â
All of this leads SLCC into an interesting mirror of the 2016-17 season, where they also started 10-0. However, Salt Lake finished 11-10 from there, losing in the first round of the Region 18 tourney to College of Southern Idaho. Needless to say, this season the Bruins are attempting to take advantage of the hot start to improve as league play nears.
SLCC coach
Todd Phillips said the week will help test his squad.
"We are looking to get through the week with a big team effort," he said. "We had some guys go down with injuries and a couple guys who are playing banged up. That is why we like our depth, next man up."
Â
The challenge starts with Treasure Valley Monday, an opponent Salt Lake defeated 86-73 at home last season. TVCC, which is located in Ontario, Ore., is 2-2 on the season. The Chukars defeated SWAC rival USU-Eastern but lost to another SWAC program, Southern Idaho.
Â
Thursday's game against Hillcrest Prep will give the Bruins valuable time to work on a variety of different skills against strong competition, setting the stage for Saturday's 6:00 p.m. contest against Williston State College. Williston sits at 4-4 on the season, having lost to CSI to open the season in North Dakota. The Tetons are currently scoring 79 points per game, but surrendering 86.5 points to opponents.
"This should be a really good challenge for us," he said. "Playing 3 games in 4 days is going to require all of our depth, which I think is a strength for us. We are looking to maintain our consistency throughout the game."
