SALT LAKE CITY – With their first match inside the Bruin Arena since Aug. 30, the No. 9 Bruins were able to pull out a strong 3-1 win over No. 7 Western Wyoming Community College.
Set one saw a back-and-forth contest as neither team was able to gain a lead larger than three points. Later in the set, WWCC had a one point 18-17 advantage of SLCC and looked to be on the verge of taking the set and a 1-0 lead for the match. Whatever momentum the Mustangs had the Bruins immediately put that in the past as SLCC reeled off eight straight points to gain the 1-0 advantage with a set one score of 25-18.
Set two started where set one left off this time with SLCC opening on a four point run, leading to 12 consecutive points, and never looked back as the Bruins took a commanding 2-0 lead with by a score of 25-14 including a five point run to close out the set.
After the break however, WWCC showed a glimpse as to why they are ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA national poll. For the entire set, the Bruins were never able to lead by more than two points as the Mustangs wrapped up a close set three win 24-26.
Heading to the important set four, each team was going blow for blow. With the score knotted at 10-10, the Bruins strung together a little four point run of their own to take a 14-10 lead. Slowly creeping their way back into the set and possibly the match, the Mustangs got to score to 20-22 on the verge of taking the set.
Then
Sadie Pond (Herriman, UT) took over.
After a
Sequoia Lofton (Spokane, WA) kill to put the score at 21-22 still in favor of WWCC, Pond recorded four straight points with three kills and a block assist to wrap up the set 25-23 and the 3-1 match victory for the Bruins.
Pond ended up with 13 kills hitting an unbelievable .458 and four blocks.
Including Pond, the Bruins ended up with four players with double digit kills.
Carol Grasso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led all players with 16 kills and closed out a double-double by adding 17 digs.
Jessica Quayle (Ogden, UT) hit .400 for the match with 12 kills as Lofton chipped in 10 kills and three solo blocks.
Setter
Rachel Davis (Riverton, UT) totaled 44 assists. On the defensive end
Mariana Pilon (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had 22 digs while
Kallie Schmit (Kalama, WA) had five blocks including two solo.
Next up, Head Coach
Sue Dulaney and the rest of the Bruins will open up Scenic West Athletic Conference play against in-state foe No. 10 Snow College Saturday, Sept. 27. First serve inside the Bruin Arena is slated for 1 p.m.
