Jason Jourdan tosses gem in game one, offense struggles game two

SALT LAKE CITY, UT It was a tale of two tapes for the SLCC (34-14, 20-6 SWAC) baseball team as the Bruins cruised to a 3-0 victory over the visiting College of Southern Idaho (21-27, 10-16 SWAC) Golden Eagles. That momentum was halted as CSI jumped out to an 8-0 lead leading to a 9-4 win over SLCC.

It was all Jason Jourdan (Syracuse, UT) in the game one seven inning contest as he dominated the CSI lineup for his eighth win of the year, including his second complete game. After allowing a leadoff single to start the game and another single in the second inning, Jourdan settled in and did not allow another base hit the remaining 5 innings.

The scoring started in the bottom of the second inning as freshman Taylor Snyder (Elk Ridge, UT) lined a one out single. Advancing to second base on a Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT) groundout, Snyder was plated by a Zach Willis (Lindon, UT) single putting SLCC up 1-0, proving to be the game winner.

Putting SLCC up 2-0 with a one out home run in the bottom of the fourth by sophomore Derrick Whitney (South Jordan, UT), his fourth of the year, Whitney led the charge again in the sixth inning with a leadoff single. After advancing on yet another Watts groundout, Willis recorded his second run batted in (RBI) reaching on an error by the third baseman leading to a Whitney run.

Golden Eagle southpaw Kolton Brost took the loss.

Game two was a whole different story starting in the top of the second.

After three consecutive singles for CSI from Harrison Ramey, Jeff Gilstrap and Bobby Wright, SLCC sophomore starter Anthony Dixon (West Valley City, UT) balked in the game's first run putting CSI up 1-0. Pushing the score to 3-0 after two consecutive one run innings from the Golden Eagles in the third and fourth innings, the flood gates appeared to be opened.

In the top of the fifth, CSI's Preston Young reached on a throwing error by Whitney and a Jordan Godman hit by pitch (HBP). Dixon left one over the plate as CSI catcher Bodie Cooper hit the left-center gap for a double plating Young and Godman. Relieved by freshman Jared White (Riverton, UT), Wright found a hole up the middle for another CSI run. Two more run in the sixth and seventh pushed the lead to 8-0, then the Bruins showed some life.

With the bases loaded, Colton Barkdull (Erda, UT) got SLCC on the board with a bases clearing double to the left-center gap bumping the lead to 8-3. Another CSI run in the top half of the ninth proved to be more than enough as SLCC managed only one run putting the final score 9-4. Dixon took only his second loss of the year as CSI's Isaac Anderson recorded his fourth win.

The Bruins will wrap up their regular season tomorrow, April 25, with a doubleheader against CSI at Cate Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. followed by game two 30 minutes after.
