Salt Lake City, UT—The SLCC baseball team (25-9, 13-3 SWAC) swept a pair of games with in-state opponent USU-Eastern (11-16) in non-conference play at Cate Field. SLCC won the season series with the Golden Eagles 4-0 and is currently atop the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings ahead of Western Nevada College (WNC) (23-11, 8-6 SWAC).
The Bruins defeated the Golden Eagles 12-2 by run rule in six innings in game one and won the day's second contest over USU-Eastern by a final score of 8-0.
Game 1 Recap: USU-Eastern tallied the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. SLCC answered with five runs of its own in the bottom of the first frame, beginning with sophomore catcher Colton Barkdull (Erda, UT) crossing the plate on a bases-loaded walk to freshman infielder Taylor Snyder (Elk Ridge, UT).
Sophomore outfielder Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT) hit a base-clearing triple to score three teammates and extend the SLCC lead to 4-1. Watts would later score on a single from freshman catcher Zach Willis (South Jordan, UT) to give the Bruins a 5-1 lead. The Bruins added another run in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore outfielder Nick Urban (Las Vegas, NV) scored on a single from Willis.
The Golden Eagles tallied a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 6-2. The Bruins would add three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and three more in the sixth frame to secure the 12-2 victory by run rule.
SLCC out-hit USU-Eastern 11-7 with the Golden Eagles committing three fielding errors to one for Salt Lake. USU-Eastern stranded eight base runners to four for the Bruins.
Game 1 Stats: Watts was 1-for-3 at the plate with a triple, two runs scored and five runs batted in (RBI). Sophomore infielder Derrick Whitney went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI and freshman outfielder Caleb Summerhays (Las Vegas, NV) was 3-for-3 with a stolen base, three runs scored and one RBI. Willis went 2-for-3 with one RBI in the winning effort.
Sophomore pitcher Anthony Dixon (West Valley City, UT) picked up the win with four strikeouts, no walks, two hits and one run (earned) allowed in two innings of work. His win/loss record now stands at 5-1.
Sophomore pitcher Brady Corless (Spanish Fork, UT) struck out one USU-Eastern batter with two walks, four hits and one run (earned) allowed in three innings on the mound. Sophomore pitcher Tanner Johnson (Manhattan, MT) yielded one hit and one walk in one inning pitched.
Game 2 Recap: SLCC put its first run on the board in the third inning with a single by sophomore infielder Robert Grilli (Mississauga, ONT) to score freshman utility player Garrett Bushman (Farmington, UT). Salt Lake added three more runs in the fourth inning and closed out a run-rule victory with four more tallies in the bottom of the sixth inning.
SLCC out-hit USU-Eastern 8-4 with the Bruins committing the only fielding error in the contest.
Game 2 Stats: Watts was 3-for-4 with two triples, a run scored and four RBI. Grilli was 1-for-2 with a walk and one RBI and Whitney went 1-for-1 with one RBI in the winning effort.
Freshman pitcher Chris Bradford (Las Vegas, NV) picked up the win with three strikeouts, one walk, three hits and no runs allowed in three innings on the mound. Sophomore pitcher Nick Denny (Anoka, MN) struck out one USU-Eastern batter with one walk and no hits or runs allowed in two innings of work.
Freshman pitcher Jason Jourdan (Syracuse, UT) had one strikeout with one hit allowed in one shutout inning pitched.
Next up for Head Coach DG Nelson and the Bruins is a pair of home games against WNC on Friday, Apr. 4 at Cate Field in West Jordan, UT. First pitch for game one is slated for 1 p.m. and game two will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first matchup.
