Salt Lake City, UT—The SLCC baseball team (16-8, 8-2 SWAC) won both games of a doubleheader with Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) (7-20, 2-8 SWAC) on Friday in the 2014 home openers for the Bruins at Cate Field.
The Bruins defeated the Spartans
5-2 in the day's first game and won a
7-4 decision over CNCC in the day's second contest. The pair of victories extends SLCC's win streak to six games.
Game 1 Recap: The Bruins opened up a 3-0 lead and held off a two-run rally from the Spartans in the sixth inning by adding a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth frame to build a 5-2 lead. Salt Lake retired the Spartan side in order in the seventh inning to win its first SWAC home game of the season.
The Bruins out-hit the Spartans 9-5 with one error committed by SLCC. CNCC was error-free for the contest.
Game 1 Stats vs. CNCC: Freshman pitcher
Jason Jourdan (Syracuse, UT) struck out six Spartan batters with no walks to pick up the win in game one. He allowed five hits and two runs, none earned, in six innings of work. Sophomore pitcher
Eric Carter (Santa Clara, UT) earned the save with two strikeouts and no hits, runs or walks allowed in one inning on the mound.

Robert Grilli (Mississauga, Ontario) was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a stolen base and two runs batted in (RBI). Sophomore infielder
Derrick Whitney (South Jordan, UT) was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI and freshman catcher
Zach Willis (Lindon, UT) was 0-for-3 with a sacrifice grounder for one RBI.
Game 2 Recap: Salt Lake scored at least one run in each of the first five innings of play to build a 6-3 lead over the Spartans, with each side tallying one more run in the late stages of the contest. For the second consecutive game, SLCC did not need to use its final at-bats. The Bruins now lead the season series with CNCC 2-1.

Colton Barkdull (Erda, UT) was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a triple, a walk, a run scored and two RBI.
Grilli was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored and freshman outfielder
Caleb Summerhays (Las Vegas, NV) was 1-for-4 with a solo home run.

Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT) went 3-for-4 with one RBI and freshman infielder
Taylor Snyder (Elk Ridge, UT) was 1-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI.
Bruin sophomore pitcher
Anthony Dixon (West Valley City, UT) struck out two Spartans with seven hits, two walks and three runs (two earned) allowed to earn up the game two win in 5.1 innings of work.
Sophomore pitcher
Jordan Hager (Farmington, UT) had three strikeouts with two walks, three hits and one unearned run allowed in three complete innings.

DG Nelson and the Bruins is a doubleheader vs. CNCC on Saturday, Mar. 15 at Cate Field. First pitch for game one is slated for Noon with the day's second contest beginning approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first matchup.
