Las Vegas, NV—The SLCC Baseball team (4-4) split a pair of contests on Friday at the annual Coyote Slug-Out hosted by the College of Southern Nevada. The Bruins won the day's first contest 12-6 over Prairie (Canada) Baseball Academy (PBA) and fell to No. 7-ranked Chipola (FL) College 8-0 in the second game of Friday's doubleheader.

Game 1 Recap – SLCC trailed PBA 5-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Bruins used a six-run rally in the bottom of the frame to build a 10-6 lead. Salt Lake extended its lead to 12-6 with two runs in the eighth and did not bat in the ninth inning. The Bruins finished with 15 base hits to 11 for Prairie Baseball Academy in the first of two meetings between the teams scheduled during the Coyote Slug-Out.

Game 2 Recap – The Bruins held one of the nation's top offensive teams scoreless through three innings and kept the contest close until Chipola College broke the game open with five runs in the seventh inning.

The Indians added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning and held SLCC to four base hits in the non-conference matchup. Chipola finished with 11 hits and one error committed, with SLCC having four errors committed in the ballgame.

Game 1 – Stats vs. PBA: SLCC freshman pitcher Jared White (Riverton, UT) picked up the win over PBA with five strikeouts and three runs allowed. Freshman pitcher Cameron Cole (Las Vegas, NV) allowed no runs in two innings of relief.

Bruin sophomore infielder Robert Grilli (Mississauga, ONT) was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and sophomore outfielder Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT) was 2-for-4 with a triple in the winning effort. Freshman outfielder Caleb Summerhays (Las Vegas, NV) was 3-for-5 with a triple and sophomore infielder Derrick Whitney (South Jordan, UT) went 2-for-5.

Game 2 – Stats vs. Chipola: Bruin freshman pitcher Jason Jourdan (Syracuse, UT) struck out three Chipola batters with four hits and two runs allowed in six and two thirds innings of work.

Whitney was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and a walk and sophomore catcher Colton Barkdull (Erda, UT) went 1-for-3 in the loss. Watts was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

Next up for Head Coach DG Nelson and the Bruins is a matchup with Okanagan (Canada) College on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Coyote Slug-Out in Las Vegas, NV. First pitch for the game is slated for Noon.
