Prescott, AZ—The SLCC Baseball team (3-3) picked up a doubleheader sweep over Yavapai College (YC) on Wednesday in non-conference play. The Bruins edged the Roughriders 4-3 in game one and won a 10-5 decision over Yavapai in the day's second contest.

The Bruins trailed the Roughriders 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning of game one. Sophomore infielder Robert Grilli (Mississauga, Ontario) hit a game-tying RBI double in the seventh inning and freshman catcher Zach Willis (Lindon, UT) brought Grilli in with the eventual game-winning single.

After three and a half innings of play in game two, SLCC led Yavapai 5-0. The Roughriders mounted a rally with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but SLCC responded with a run in the top of the sixth and four more tallies in the top of the eighth frame to widen the margin to 10-1. A late four-run rally from Yavapai came up short and the Bruins completed the doubleheader sweep with a 10-5 road win.

Game 1 – Stats vs. YC: Grilli was 1-for-4 with the game-tying double and scored the game-winning run. Willis went 2-for-3 at the plate with game-winning base hit.

Sophomore outfielder Nick Urban (Las Vegas, NV) was 2-for-4 with a triple and sophomore outfielder Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT) was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of walks and a run scored.

Freshman infielder Taylor Snyder (Elk Ridge, UT) was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored in the winning effort.

Sophomore pitcher Jordan Hager (Farmington, UT) picked up the win with one strikeout and no walks issued in one and a third innings of relief. Sophomore pitcher Eric Carter (Santa Clara, UT) earned the save with two strikeouts and yielded no walks or runs in an inning of relief.

Game 2 – Stats vs. YC: SLCC freshman pitcher Chris Bradford (Las Vegas, NV) earned the win in game two with three strikeouts and two walks in four and two thirds innings of work. Sophomore pitcher Jarren Adam (Murray, UT) struck out four Roughrider batters with one walk in two innings pitched.

Sophomore pitcher Nick Denny (Anoka, MN) had a strikeout and one walk in one and one thirds innings on the mound and Hager threw a scoreless eighth inning to help the Bruins complete the doubleheader sweep.

Sophomore infielder Derrick Whitney (South Jordan, UT) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of walks, two RBI and four runs scored. Snyder went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt and two runs scored and sophomore infielder/pitcher Kade Teter (Pocatello, ID) was 1-for-2 at the plate with a triple and a walk.

Next up for Head Coach DG Nelson and the Bruins is a pair of contests at the annual Coyote Slug-out Tournament in Las Vegas, NV on Friday, Feb. 14. The Bruins will face Prairie (Canada) Baseball Academy to open the tournament with first pitch slated for *10 a.m. and SLCC will square off with Okanagan (Canada) College on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
