SLCC Baseball Preps for Slate of Six Games This Week

Bruins get set for doubleheader vs. Yavapai and annual Coyote Slug-Out Tournament

Salt Lake City, UT—The SLCC Baseball team (1-3) will play a busy slate of six games this week in Arizona and Nevada. The Bruins will open this week's competition with an away doubleheader against Yavapai College on Wednesday, Feb. 12 with first pitch for game one slated for *1 p.m. Game two of the doubleheader will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first contest. SLCC lost a 3-2 decision to Yavapai on Jan. 31 in Henderson, NV.

The Bruins will then travel to the annual Coyote Slug-Out Tournament for four games in Las Vegas, NV. SLCC will open the Slug-Out against Prairie Baseball Academy (Canada) on Thursday, Feb. 14 with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Later that day, SLCC will square off with Chipola (FL) College at 3 p.m.

On Friday, Feb. 15, the Bruins will take on Okanagan College (Canada) at 10 a.m. and Salt Lake will close out the tournament with a second game against Prairie Baseball Academy on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m.

Bruins by the Numbers: SLCC is scoring an average of 2.5 runs per contests and is allowing an average of 4.25 runs per outing to its opposition so far in 2014.

Sophomore infielder Robert Grilli (Mississauga, Ontario) leads the team in batting average at .400 and has six hits including a double and a triple with two runs scored. Sophomore infielder Derrick Whitney (South Jordan, UT) currently owns the team lead in runs batted in (RBI) with four and the Bingham High School graduate has four hits through four games with one double thus far.

SLCC has a team batting average of .178 through four contests with 23 total hits so far this season.

Bruin sophomore pitcher Anthony Dixon (West Valley City, UT) has the lone win on the SLCC pitching staff and currently sports and earned run average (ERA) of 2.57. The right-hander from Taylorsville High School has three strikeouts and six hits allowed in 7.0 innings of work.

Salt Lake has a team ERA of 4.00 so far with 29 total strikeouts between 12 different pitchers that have made appearances.

Bruin Softball Continues SWAC Play with Pair of Doubleheaders vs. Western Nevada this Weekend

SLCC gets set for first four matchups vs. Wildcats this season

Salt Lake City, UT—The No. 16 SLCC Softball team (7-6, 5-3 SWAC) will head to Carson City, NV this week for a pair of doubleheaders against Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent Western Nevada College (WNC) (3-10, 0-4 SWAC) on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 14-15.

Thursday's doubleheader vs. the Wildcats will begin at 2 p.m. Game two on Thursday will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first contest. First pitch for game one on Friday will take place at 1 p.m. with game two also following 30 minutes after the end of the day's first matchup.

Bruins by the Numbers: SLCC is scoring an average of 7.0 runs per game and is allowing an average of 4.8 tallies per contest to its opponents.

The Bruins are led in batting average by sophomore infielder Megan Bradshaw (Orem, UT), with the Mountain View High School graduate currently hitting .500. She is second on the team in base hits with 19 and has two home runs, three doubles and 11 runs batted in (RBI).

Freshman catcher/designated hitter Riana Splinter (Las Vegas, NV) has a team-high six home runs thus far and is hitting .436 through 13 games. She has six doubles and a team-high 25 RBI.

Freshman infielder Megan Reed (Pocatello, ID) is hitting .490 with a team-high 24 base hits. The Silverado High School graduate has four doubles and eight RBI. Freshman infielder Bailie Nelson (Las Vegas, NV) is hitting .486 with 17 base hits including a double, a triple and a pair of home runs for 12 RBI so far this season.

Bruin freshman pitcher Courtney Platt (Riverton, UT) leads the staff with six starts and currently has a win-loss record of 3-2. Her earned run average (ERA) is a team-low 2.67 with 16 strikeouts in 27.0 innings of work. The SLCC staff has a combined ERA of 4.88.
