No. 6 SLCC hopes to wrap up 2014 regular season on a high note

SALT LAKE CITY – With the 2014 regular season coming to a close and with two home matches remaining, the No. 6 SLCC volleyball will look to ride into the Region 18 Tournament on a high note.

WHERE SLCC STANDS
A week removed from falling to their lowest national ranking all season at No. 10, the Bruins wrapped up their season long road swing and earned a pair of road wins. Facing North Idaho College on Thursday, Oct. 23, the two went toe to toe however SLCC came out on top with the 3-2 win.

The second win came against then third ranked College of Southern Idaho on Saturday, Oct. 25. Arguably the best match the Bruins have played all season, SLCC rolled to an impressive 3-1 win.

With the two quality wins SLCC has moved up in the final regular season NJCAA poll to No. 6.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
After hitting the road for the last three weekends, the Bruins will now return home for their final two matches of the 2014 season. Also closing out their Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) schedule, SLCC will host Colorado Northwestern Community College and in-state opponent Utah State University-Eastern.

On Halloween night at 7 p.m. the Bruins will take on the Spartans of CNCC where previously the two squared off in Rangely, Colo. on Oct. 11 where SLCC swept their way to a win 25-14, 25-18, and 25-16. Including that win, the Bruins are now 12-0 since the 2009 season will all 12 wins coming by way of 3-0.

Saturday's Nov. 1 match will feature the Eagles of USU-E at 1 p.m. inside the Bruin Arena. Previously facing each other in Price, Utah on Oct. 10, USU-E gave SLCC some issues by jumping out to a 2-0 lead and threatening to sweep. Coming out to set three with some fire, the Bruins dominated the three remaining sets to earn the come from behind 3-2 victory. With that win SLCC improves to 12-1 against the Eagles since the 2009 season.

Both matches will be streamed live at live.ksl.com.

So far in 2014, CNCC is 5-18 overall, 0-7 in SWAC play.

Women's Basketball:

No. 10 Bruins will open up their season Saturday against SLCC alumni

OPENING UP
Coming off of arguably the best season in the history of SLCC women's basketball where the Bruins advanced all the way to the NJCAA Sweet-16, Head Coach Betsy Specketer and the Bruins went undefeated in their annual SLCC Jamboree last Friday, Oct. 24.

With the regular season opening up Saturday, Nov. 1, against SLCC alumni, the Bruins have opened up in the 2014-15 NJCAA preseason poll at No. 10. Returning talented sophomores such as returning starter and First Team All-Region 18 pick Cassidy Whitney (American Fork, UT), Raushan Gultekin (Lund, Sweden), and Tanesha Daniels (Brigham City, UT) and with the additions of freshmen Clarissa Sabedra (Phoenix, AZ) and Shelby Richards (Riverton, UT) the Bruins are expected to contend for a second consecutive SWAC title.

Saturday's game against the alumni will be streamed live at live.ksl.com with tip-off currently scheduled for 6 p.m.

Men's Basketball:

No. 8 SLCC will travel to Ariz. and open up their season on Halloween night

OPENING UP
With the recent success of the SLCC men's basketball team, it comes as no surprise that the Bruins have opened up in 2014-15 NJCAA preseason poll at No. 8. With back-to-back NJCAA National Tournament appearances the past two seasons it should be an expectation for Head Coach Todd Phillips to make a third consecutive trip.

Winning the Region 18 title last season, the Bruins return wingman De'Sean Parsons (San Francisco, CA) and point guard Zerrion Payton (Oakland, CA) and will add to the mix a pair of seven-footers in Brandon Morley (South Jordan, UT) and Scott Cook (Mesa, AZ).

SLCC will open up their season with four games in Ariz. with the first coming against Tohono O'odham Community College on Halloween night at 7:30 p.m. in Tuscon. Staying in Tuscon the Bruins will take on Glendale Community College Saturday, Nov. 1, at 3:30.

SLCC will then hit the road for Phoenix to take on Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Monday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. They will then wrap up the road swing in Scottsdale to take on Scottsdale College Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m.
