COEUR D'ALENE, ID – In a well fought match between the No. 10 Bruins and the Cardinals of North Idaho College, it was SLCC that was able to pull out the tight 3-2 win.
Previously facing each other in Salt Lake City on Oct. 4, SLCC defended their home floor with a rather convincing 3-1 win over the Region 18 foe.
This go around NIC appeared poised to defend their home floor with a 25-22 set one victory over the Bruins.
Answering back in set two, SLCC evened things up 1-1 by taking the set 25-21 heading into the break.
Opening up set three the Bruins jumped out to an early 3-0 lead including two service aces from
Rachel Davis (Riverton, UT). From then on out neither was able to gain momentum until SLCC regained a five point lead 22-17 and on the verge to take a 2-1 lead. Clawing their way back, NIC got the score back to even only to see SLCC take the close 25-23 set win.
Set four saw the Cardinals dominate with an easy 25-15 win to set up a winner take all set five.
Similar to how the first three sets were played, neither team would give in. The Bruins then put some points together to take the set 15-11 to seal the win.
The freshmen duo of
Kallie Schmit (Kalama, WA) and
Brighton Taylor (Bountiful, UT) led SLCC offensively with Schmit hammering 14 kills and Taylor putting down 13 hitting an unbelievable .450.
Playing in front of many people from her hometown,
Sequoia Lofton (Spokane, WA) played a huge role off the bench coming up with five kills and five blocks. Also coming off the bench and providing a crucial lift was
Nicole Peacock (Logan, UT) with two kills on four swings.
Davis added 38 assists to go along three aces.
Cassandra Fenton (Helendale, CA) also had three aces as SLCC combined for 12 aces.
The win pushes SLCC's overall record to 17-8 and 5-2 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
