VP Challenge and Shoot Pink events at MBB and WBB home games this week
This week, the
VP Challenge and
Shoot Pink Breast Cancer Awareness nights will be held during the SLCC Men's and Women's Basketball games at Bruin Arena. On Thursday, Jan. 31, both Bruin Basketball squads will go to work against Scenic West Athletic Conference opponent Colorado Northwestern CC, with special halftime events for the annual
VP Challenge.
The five SLCC Vice Presidents,
Deneece Huftalin (Student Services),
Tim Sheehan (Government and Community Relations),
Dennis Klaus (Business Services),
Alison McFarlane (Institutional Advancement) and
Dr. Chris Picard (Provost, Academic Affairs) will be competing to see who can draw the most attendance to the game vs. CNCC, and have put together basketball teams to compete for the
VP Challenge Championship during the halftimes of the Men's and Women's games on Thursday. Tipoff for the SLCC Women's game is slated for 5:30 p.m. and the Bruin Men's game gets underway at 7:35 p.m.
Saturday's SLCC Men's and Women's Basketball games against in-state foe USU-Eastern will take place on
'Shoot Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Night' with SLCC Athletics auctioning autographed pink shooting shirts, basketballs and more to raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The primary focus is on breast cancer awareness, treatment and the search for a cure. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to support the cause, and the Bruins will be clad in pink as well. The Women's game tips off at 3 p.m. and the Men's game starts at 5:05 p.m.
The Bruins would like to give a special thanks to
Swing for Life founder
Kathy Howa (pictured), who is a breast cancer survivor herself and has championed the cause for years.
Howa appears annually at the SLCC
Shoot Pink (basketball),
Dig Pink (volleyball) and
Swing for Life (baseball/softball) events to spread the word about the fight.
Kathy is the Head Coach of Rowland Hall High School softball.
No. 15 SLCC Men's Hoops kicks off five-game home stand vs. CNCC, USU-Eastern this week
The
No. 15-ranked Salt Lake Community College Men's Basketball team (19-3, 7-1 SWAC) has two home games on tap for this week that will kick off a five-game home stand for the Bruins. The SLCC Men finished up a five-game road swing in Idaho over the weekend.
SLCC defeated Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) rival College of Southern Idaho (CSI) (16-7, 4-5 SWAC) 76-67 on Thursday, Jan. 24 in Twin Falls, ID. The Bruins out-rebounded the Eagles 51-42 and shot 40.3% from the field in the road victory. The SLCC Men now lead the season series with the CSI Eagles 2-0. The win marked the 15
th consecutive win for the Bruins, giving the team the sixth longest win streak in the NJCAA.
SLCC sophomore guard
Tyrell Corbin (Salt Lake City, UT) led the Bruins with 16 points to go with five assists in the win over CSI. Freshman forward
Sai Tummala (Phoenix, AZ) turned in a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds and freshman guard
Gary Payton II (Las Vegas, NV) added 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Bruins were defeated for the first time since Nov. 23 of 2012 by SWAC foe
No. 13-ranked North Idaho College (NIC) (21-3, 8-1 SWAC) on Saturday. SLCC fell to the Cardinals 87-78 in Coeur d'Alene, ID despite a solid comeback effort. The Bruins were out-rebounded 38-28 by NIC and had 14 more personal fouls overall.
Tummala (Phoenix, AZ) scored a team-high 20 points to go with five rebounds in the losing effort. Sophomore forward
JuWan Buchanan (Seattle, WA) tallied 15 points with two rebounds and sophomore guard
Skyler Halford (Orem, UT) added 13 points and four assists for the Bruins.
This week, the Bruins will host Colorado Northwestern CC (CNCC) (7-16, 0-8 SWAC) on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7:35 p.m. and will take on in-state foe USU-Eastern (13-10, 3-5 SWAC) on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 5:05 p.m. Both games will take place at Bruin Arena.
The game vs. CNCC takes place on the annual
VP Challenge night, and the matchup with USU-Eastern marks the annual
'Shoot Pink Breast Cancer Awareness' event. These events are detailed in the above article.
As a team, Salt Lake currently leads the SWAC in

Halford leads the team and conference in points per game with

Corbin currently leads the league in steals per contest with
2.8. Payton II has the best assist/turnover ratio in the SWAC at
2.5.
SLCC moved down four spots from
No. 11 to
No. 15 in the latest NJCAA Top 25 polls released on Wendesday. The Bruins have won 17 of their last 20 contests and are averaging 85.7 points scored per ballgame. SLCC is allowing just 62.1 points per game to the opposition on average.

No. 19 SLCC Women's Basketball seeks redemption for road losses with home games this week
The
No. 19-ranked SLCC Women's Basketball team (13-8, 4-4 SWAC) will play a pair of home contests this week in SWAC play that will kick off a five-game home stand.
The SLCC Women will square off with Colorado Northwestern CC (CNCC) (12-11, 1-6 SWAC) on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. and will face in-state competition USU-Eastern (6-14, 3-5 SWAC) on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 3:00 p.m.
The Bruins enter this week on the heels of a pair of tough road losses, falling to rival College of Southern Idaho (CSI) (13-10, 7-2 SWAC) in a nail biter 69-68 in overtime on Thursday, Jan. 24 and dropping a battle with
No. 2-ranked North Idaho College (NIC) (23-1, 8-1 SWAC) 68-54 on Saturday, Jan. 26.
In Thursday's loss to CSI, Bruin sophomore center
Rachel Morris (Mesquite, NV) scored 14 points to go with nine rebounds and five blocks in the losing effort. Sophomore guard
Katie Richens (Roosevelt, UT) scored 11 points with six rebounds and freshman guard
Natalie Parsons (Bountiful, UT) added 14 points and three rebounds.
Bruin sophomore guard
Diamond Marchand (Ellenwood, GA) hit a game-tying three point shot as time expired to force overtime, and
Marchand nearly won the contest in the extra frame but had her final attempt glance off the right side of the rim as the final horn sounded.
In the loss to
No. 2 NIC on Saturday,
Morris scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds and
Parsons scored 11 points in the losing effort. Freshman guard
Miranda Averett (Price, UT) came off the bench to score 11 points.

46 and an average per game of
2.2. Morris is also the SWAC leader in defensive rebounding at
5.3 per game.
SLCC is averaging 61.3 points scored per game and is currently allowing the opposition an average of 55.4 points per outing on average.

No. 1-ranked SLCC Softball gets set for Great Western Shootout
The
No. 1-ranked SLCC Softball team (1-2) will take part in the annual Great Western Shootout this week, playing a slate of six games in Yuma, AZ. The tournament is hosted by Arizona Western CC. SLCC started the season 1-2 at the Southern Nevada Kickoff and had three games cancelled due to inclement weather.
The two-time consecutive NJCAA National Runners-Up fell to
No. 16 Yavapai College 6-5 before taking down this weekend's tournament host Arizona Western 7-4 in the middle matchup of a triple header on Friday, Jan. 25 in Henderson, NV.
SLCC finished the day with a 9-6 loss to
No. 8 Eastern Arizona and returned home to Salt Lake City after its remaining four games at the season-opening tournament were scratched.
In Friday's opening loss to
No. 16 Yavapai, SLCC sophomore outfielder
Malia Campos (Murray, UT) was 3-of-4 at the plate with two runs scored and sophomore catcher
Lyndsey Healey (Spanish Fork, UT) was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Bruin sophomore pitcher
MaCauley Flint (Roy, UT) struck nine Yavapai batters out in the loss.
In the Bruin victory over Arizona Western,
Campos went 2 for 3 with a triple,
Healey was also 2 for 3 with the bat turning in a double and an RBI and freshman pitcher
Kellie McCleve (Glendora, CA) allowed five hits and struck out two batters to clinch the win.
The loss to
No. 8 Eastern Arizona saw Bruin sophomore infielder
Whitney Holt (Tooele, UT) go a perfect 4-for-4 with the bat, with a double and a three-run home run.
Campos was 2-for-4 with a triple and freshman pitcher
Alex Petrolia (Henderson, NV) allowed eight hits in 5.2 innings of work in her hometown.
At the Great Western Shootout this week, the top-ranked Bruin Softball squad will play a set of three doubleheaders. On Thursday, Jan. 31, SLCC will first face off with Mesa Community College at Noon and will then take on Arizona Western at 2:30 p.m. On Friday, Feb. 1, the Bruins will do battle with
No. 8 Eastern Arizona at 11 a.m. and will play El Paso CC at 3 p.m.
On Saturday, Feb. 2, the Bruins will round out the early season tournament with matchups against Golden West CC at 8 a.m. and will play its third game in two weeks against Arizona Western at 10 a.m.
The Bruins are averaging six runs scored per game and are allowing 6.3 runs on average to the opposition. Freshman pitcher
Kellie McCleve (Glendora, CA) has the lone win for the SLCC pitching staff thus far and currently has an earned runs average (ERA) of 2.45. Bruin sophomore infielder
Whitney Holt (Tooele, UT) is batting .700 through three contests, with seven hits in three games including a home run, a triple and a double.

No. 17 SLCC Baseball has two weeks off from game action prior to doubleheader vs. Yavapai
The
No. 17-ranked SLCC Baseball team (3-1) will take nearly two weeks off from game action and will prepare for a doubleheader with Yavapai College on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in Prescott, AZ. The first game of the doubleheader will get underway at Noon and the second game will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
Bruin Baseball opened the season at the Coyote Border Battle, and following a season-opening 11-2 loss to Yavapai won three straight games. SLCC defeated Cochise College 9-3 on Saturday, Jan. 26 and snagged a pair of close victories the following day, edging past Glendale CC 1-0 on Sunday, Jan. 27 in the early game and winning another close one 8-7 over Arizona Western in the later contest.

JC Snyder (Salem Hills, UT) was 3-3 at the plate, tallying two doubles and one run scored in the losing effort. Freshman infielder
Robert Grilli (Mississauga, ONT) went 2 for 4 with the bat and sophomore pitcher
Rhett Parkinson (Wellsville, UT) threw four innings of shutout baseball with four strikeouts.
Against Cochise College, Sophomore pitcher
Michael Springer (West Jordan, UT) picked up the win with five innings pitched.
Springer struck out five Cochise batters and allowed no earned runs. Freshman pitcher
Wyle Cunningham (Alberta, CAN) pitched three innings of relief with three strikeouts and no earned runs allowed.

Steven Adam (Ontario, CAN) was 2-for-2 with the bat with a double and two runs scored in the winning effort. Freshman outfielder
Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT) knocked in the go-ahead run with a two-RBI triple in the fifth inning and was 1-for-3 at the plate.
In the win over Glendale, freshman pitcher
Brady Corless (Spanish Fork, UT) threw seven innings with eight strikeouts and allowed just two hits. Sophomore pitcher
Justin Rupe (Bountiful, UT) picked up the save in two innings of work with four strikeouts.
Sophomore catcher
Nathan Fishel (Littleton, CO) drove in the only run of the ballgame with an RBI single and was 1-for-3 at the plate. Freshman outfielder
Connor Williams (South Jordan, UT) was 2 for 4 with a triple.
In the Bruins' win over Arizona Western, sophomore utility player
Palmer Page (Saratoga Springs, UT) hit two home runs and accounted for four RBIs.
Page was 2 for 3 with the bat to help SLCC secure its third straight win. Sophomore infielder
JC Snyder (Salem, UT) turned in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored.
The Bruins are averaging five runs scored per game thus far, and
Page already has two home runs on the year, both coming against Arizona Western on Jan. 27.
Page has a slugging percentage of .833 early on to go with an on base percentage of .500 through four ballgames.
