What's 'Bruin':
SLCC Men's Basketball beats No. 20 Snow College in SWAC opener, Fiesta  JC Shootout ahead

The Salt Lake Community College Men's Basketball team (10-2, 1-0 SWAC) picked up a big win over No. 20-ranked Snow College (12-2, 0-1 SWAC) on Saturday night at Bruin Arena. The Bruins held a 38-33 advantage at the halftime break and held on down the stretch for the 74-70 Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) opening victory.

Despite being outrebounded by the Snow Badgers 36-33, having five more personal fouls and being outscored 37-36 in the second half, the Bruins picked up the win behind a 47.5% field goal percentage with six three point baskets made on 15 attempts. The victory gives SLCC its sixth straight win overall and puts the Bruins in a three-way tie for first place in the conference to start the SWAC season. USU-Eastern and No. 13 North Idaho College (NIC) are also 1-0 in SWAC play.

SLCC sophomore guard Skyler Halford (Orem, UT) led all scorers with 23 points against Snow to match the number on his jersey. Redshirt freshman forward Sai Tummala (Phoenix, AZ – ) scored 11 points for the Bruins and sophomore guard Tyrell Corbin (Salt Lake City, UT) tallied 10 points to go with seven rebounds in the winning effort.

The SLCC men are currently ranked seventh in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in points per game at 94.6. The Bruins are 14th in the country in field goal percentage at 50.4% and eighth in the land in assists with 21.6 per contest. Halford is 19th in the NJCAA in scoring with 20.1 points per outing.

The Bruin Men will take a break from game action as they observe the holiday break, and will get back between the lines on Friday, Dec. 28 against highly-touted Monroe College at the Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout. The matchup with Monroe will tipoff at 2 p.m. and the tournament is hosted by Mesa Community College in Mesa, AZ.

The Fiesta JC Shootout will be streamed live from the tournament's website. Fans can simply click the link provided here: http://athletics.mesacc.edu/mens-basketball/fiesta-bowl-junior-college-shootout-details or visit www.slccbruins.com for streaming links. A complete web story on the tournament will be available on the SLCC Athletics home page on Dec. 26.

The Fiesta Shootout features a winner-moves-on format much like a postseason tournament, though consolation games are in place for teams that fail to pick up victories. The Bruins won the Fiesta Shootout back in the 2010-11 season, defeating Central Wyoming 98-67, Howard College 65-63 and Westwind Prep 92-70 in the final.

The Fiesta JC Shootout will mark the end of non-conference play for the Bruins, who will return to Bruin Arena to do battle with conference rival and No. 13-ranked NIC to resume SWAC play. The matchup will take place on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The home game against No. 13 NIC will be broadcast live on SLCCTV (Comcast Channel 17 in select areas) and on the Web at www.slcctv.com. Links to the broadcast can be found on the SLCC Athletics home page at www.slccbruins.com.

No. 20 Bruin Women fall to Snow College in SWAC opener, prep for Bill Culver Classic

The No. 20-ranked SLCC Women's Basketball team (7-4, 0-1 SWAC) dropped its Scenic West Athletic Conference

(SWAC) opener to in-state rival Snow College 67-64 in overtime on Saturday at Bruin Arena. The loss marks the second straight for the Bruins. The team's last three losses have been by a combined total of just six points.

In Saturday's tough loss to the Snow Badgers, the Bruins were even in rebounding at 40-40, had five more personal fouls at 19-14, and had nine more assists overall at 21-12. SLCC shot 41.3% from the field to Snow's even 40.0%.

Sophomore center Rachel Morris (Mesquite, NV - pictured) led the Bruins with 18 points in the losing effort, and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Natalie Parsons (Bountiful, UT) scored 13 points in the game, including a heart-stopping three-point shot at the final horn in regulation to send the fracas into overtime.

SLCC was outscored 8-5 in the extra frame to lose by just three points. Morris is currently 10th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) with 2.4 blocks per game.

The Bruin Women will take some time off from game action for the holiday break, and will get back to work on Thursday, Dec. 27 against Scottsdale Community College at the Bill Culver Classic in Phoenix, AZ with tipoff set for 7 p.m. SLCC will play three games in the tournament, with the remaining two matchups coming against Chandler-Gilbert CC on Friday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. and against Mesa CC on Saturday, Dec. 29 at Noon.

The Culver Classic marks the end of the non-conference schedule for the Bruins, who will return to Bruin Arena on Thursday, Jan. 3 to do battle with SWAC rival No. 1-ranked North Idaho College (NIC). The last time the two teams met, SLCC ousted the defending NJCAA National Champion NIC Cardinals from the Region 18 Tournament in the second round, winning 66-61.
