Salt Lake pitcher Shay Timmer is expected to sign with Detroit Tigers organization

Timmer embarks on pro career after signing as undrafted free agent

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Wednesday, July 17, 2024) — Former Salt Lake Bruin starting pitcher Shay Timmer will take his talents into professional baseball after signing as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers organization following the 2024 MLB First-Year Player draft.

The Tigers pounced quickly to get the 6'10 hurler into the fold after the 20-round event concluded on Tuesday, July 16. He will report to the Tigers organization on Monday, July 22.

Timmer was named second-team All-Scenic West Athletic Conference after going 6-1 over 12 appearances (eight starts) as a redshirt sophomore for the Bruins. The former Bingham High star threw the second most innings on the team (55), finishing with a 3.27 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Timmer struck out 66 batters against 33 walks while limiting opponents to a .205 batting average.

Timmer immediately becomes the second-tallest in affiliated baseball, behind the San Francisco Giants Sean Hjelle. He joins former Bruins Tanner Banks (Chicago White Sox), Eddy Alvarez (AAA Red Sox), and Breck Eichelberger (ACL Padres) at the pro level.
