Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Tuesday, May 7, 2024) - Reigning SWAC Pitcher of the Week Shelbee Jones struck out 13 batters on the way to a 4-3 win over the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles.
The Bruins got on the scoreboard first when Lexi Shaver singled home Kendyl Purdy in the bottom of the first.
After CSI tied the game in the second, SLCC loaded the bases for Bailey Marvin but came up empty when the redshirt sophomore struck out swinging.
The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the afternoon when Courtney Christiansen tagged Jones for a solo homer in the third, putting the Golden Eagles in front 3-1.
Salt Lake grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fourth when Purdy and Miranda Mansfield hit back-to-back doubles followed by a two-run shot from Shelbee Jones.
Jones gave up a lead-off double in the fifth but struck out the next three batters, stranding the runner at third to maintain the one-run advantage.
After coming up empty in the sixth, CSI put runners at the corners to open the seventh on a pair of walks and a wild pitch. With one out, Jones induced a pop out for the second out. Christiansen struck out to end the game.
Salt Lake advances to the Region 18 championship game on Wednesday, May 8.
Jones scattered four hits and six walks while striking out 13 in the ninth complete game of the season for the freshman.
Purdy finished 3-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Jones and Jettlee Ioane also had two hits.
