TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Saturday, February 3, 2024) – The No. 12 Bruins won six of seven games in the Great Western Shootout, improving to 8-3 this season.

Freshman Shelbee Jones earned SWAC Pitcher of the Week after she went 2-0 in three appearances, allowing opponents to hit .103 and finishing the weekend with a 1.17 ERA. It is the first weekly award given to SLCC this season.

Game One
SLCC 6 | Glendale CC 0

Freshman McKenna Cahoon pitched a complete game, allowing four baserunners in a 6-0 two-hit shutout.

Miranda Mansfield hit a two-run triple in the second inning to give SLCC the lead. 

Two innings later, sophomore Madison Shell kicked off a four-run fourth with a leadoff double. Savannah Lewis followed with a single, and with runners on second and third, Kendyl Purdy scored two with a single to short. Salt Lake added two more runs in the frame for their fourth-straight victory.

Game Two
SLCC 7 | Scottsdale CC 6

A five-run fourth inning allowed No. 12 Salt Lake to overcome an early deficit against the Artichokes.

Sophomore Tiffany Hermansen (2-0) struck out ten and gave up six runs, four earned while pitching around three Bruin errors. 

Purdy and Mansfield finished with two RBI each. Mansfield was the only Bruin with multiple hits, doubling twice.

SLCC stole six bases as a team.

Game Three
SLCC 8 | Chandler-Gilbert CC 0

Mikayla Jankovic (2-0) became the second straight Bruin to toss a complete game while striking out double-figure batters. The Australian freshman gave up two hits and walked one while striking out 11 in the complete game shutout.

Mansfield broke the game wide open with a bases-loaded double in the second inning. The former Clearfield Falcon finished with five RBI and two more hits. SLCC led 6-0 after a five-run explosion in the second inning. Rightfielder Jettlee Ioane picked up two hits and scored twice.

Game Four
SLCC 9 | Pima CC 3

Former Bingham Miner Shelbee Jones (2-1) completed the No. 12 Bruins hat trick, becoming the third pitcher to notch double-digit strikeouts in a complete-game win. Jones gave up three hits and worked around two errors, striking out 11 batters while walking two.

Six Bruins finished with two or more hits, led by Ioane's 3-for-3 performance with three RBI. 

Bruins pitchers combined to allow nine hits and six earned runs while striking out 32 batters on the day.

Game Five
SLCC 19 | Eastern Arizona 8

McKenna Cahoon got the win despite allowing four runs in one inning, as the Bruins benefited from seven Eastern Arizona fielding errors. SWAC Pitcher of the Week Shelbee Jones allowed one run to score in the final three innings, earning her first save.

Lexi Shaver finished with four hits and six RBI, blasting two home runs. 

Bailey Marvin went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of walks. Chloe Woods and Jones finished with three hits each as SLCC pounded out 18 hits as a team.

Game Six
SLCC 8 | Central Arizona 2

Former Crimson Cliffs star McKenna Cahoon (2-0) picked up her second win of the day, giving up three hits and one run in six innings.

SWAC POTW Shelbee Jones blasted two long balls and finished with four RBI. Marvin went 4-for-4 at the plate.

Five Bruins finished with at least two hits in the win.

Game Seven
SLCC 4 | Arizona Western 6

Four errors, including two in a five-run fourth inning, came back to haunt the Bruins as their nine-game winning streak ended.

Nakiya Seeley (0-1) took the loss, giving up six hits and five runs, though only two were earned. 

SLCC outhit Arizona Western 9-6 but couldn't overcome the costly defensive miscues. SLCC has committed 32 errors this season and is averaging 2.6 errors per game.
