TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Saturday, January 27, 2024) – The No. 12 Salt Lake opened its 2024 spring schedule over the weekend, taking three of four games against the South Mountain CC Cougars.
Sophomore righty Garrison Sumner earned Scenic West Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after striking out eight and not allowing an earned run in the Bruins opener.
Game One
SLCC 6 | SMCC 3
On the back of Sumner's masterful start, four Bruins finished with two or more hits, led by a 3-for-3, two RBI days from freshman right-fielder Luke Jacobs.
Freshman pitcher Beau Sampson allowed three hits and two runs (unearned) to lock down the first save of his collegiate career. Maxton Peck rebounded from an injury-plagued 2023 season with extra-base hits, including a solo home run, in his first two at-bats.
Game Two
SLCC 8 | SMCC 4
Shay Timmer got the victory, tossing four innings out of the bullpen. The redshirt sophomore allowed three hits and one run while striking out nine against one walk.
Leading 5-4 in the seventh, catcher Easton Romero blasted a three-run homer that gave the Bruins all the insurance they would need. Romero finished with four RBI and Trey Gambill went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Freshman Austin Taylor struck out two for a scoreless ninth in his first college appearance.
Game Three
SLCC 4 | SMCC 2
Centerfielder Trey Gambill went 2-for-3 and two RBI as the Bruins offense was limited to six hits.
Dalton Smith improved to 1-0, allowing two runs and six hits in four innings. Redshirt sophomore Kyle Keyes, got the save with three perfect innings of relief.
Game Four
SLCC 4 | SMCC 6
Salt Lake committed three errors for the second time in four games, but three unearned runs came back to bite SLCC with its first loss of the season.
Luke Jacobs went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore pitcher Cam Bott took the loss, surrendering three hits and four runs, only one earned. Bott recorded two outs before freshman Jaiven Ross came on to shut down the big inning. Ross allowed one hit in 1.1 innings.
