SLCC Softball looking to continue dominance in 2024

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 22, 2024) – Dominance is hard to quantify, yet it is even harder to sustain.

For all intents and purposes, the Salt Lake Community College Softball program has been dominant over the last two decades, posting multiple NJCAA tournament appearances and even more Scenic West Athletic Conference titles. After a 2023 campaign that saw SLCC fall short in the Region 18 tournament, the Bruins are now looking at a fresh slate and new opportunity as they look to extend their dominance into a new year.

"The most exciting part of the season starting is the unknown," said SLCC coach Cyndee Bennett. "Our athletes have been working so hard this year and over the break, it is exciting to see just how good they are as they take the field."

One reason why Bennett is so optimistic this year has come in the form of SLCC's offseason training camp. While the Bruins traditionally play strong competition in scrimmages throughout the fall, this set of offseason workouts has given Salt Lake great optimism.

"We spent the fall working hard on the game as a whole," she said. "Now that we are indoors, we get to break down our hitting and speed up our defense.  We embrace being inside as it forces us to narrow our focus on the skills that will help us be successful."

With practices going on through the fall and over the past few weeks in preparation for the start of play on January 26 in Southern Nevada, Bennett noted how the competitive atmosphere that has been created in offseason practices has set a strong foundation for the teams.

"Our goal is to give everyone opportunities to break into the starting line up and put together the most successful combination of players for the conference," she stated.

Salt Lake will open the 2024 season with a tournament hosted by the College of Southern Nevada this weekend, then will play in an Arizona-based tournament before opening Scenic West Athletic Conference play at home against Colorado Northwestern on March 1.
