No. 4 SLCC Softball opens well in Florida tourney tripleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 4, 2022) – For the second straight weekend, the No. 5 Salt Lake Community College Softball team opened a preseason tournament with a strenuous tripleheader.
 
SLCC, playing in a Florida tournament filled with highly-touted NJCAA powers, earned a mark of 1-2 on the day, moving to 3-5 overall after the day's action. The Bruins opened with a 7-3 against Central Florida, followed up by a 10-7 loss to Louisberg. Salt Lake closed the day in a 17-6 loss with Florida Southwestern.
 
The Bruins will continue with the tournament Saturday, facing off against Indian River and Miami Dade.
 
Salt Lake 7, Central Florida 3: A banner day for SLCC's Lyndsey Madrigal boosted the Bruins to an early win.
 
Salt Lake took an early lead in the second inning, then Madrigal pounced by driving in runs in the third inning on a double. She also added a pair of home runs in the game, hitting a home run in the fifth-and-seventh innings. Allie Laub also added a home run in the fifth inning.
 
Bailey Frischknecht earned the pitching win for Salt Lake, allowing three runs in five innings. Madrigal went 3-of-4 at the plate. 
 
Louisberg 10, Salt Lake 7: Plenty of early scoring gave way to a mid-game rally for Louisberg that helped them to the win.
 
SLCC posted four runs in the first inning, keyed on a Lyndsey Madrigal RBI single. The Bruins and Lewisberg scored a combined 13 runs in the first two innings. Maclee McPhie hit a two-run double for Salt Lake in the second inning.
 
McPhie finished at 2-of-3 in the game. 
 
Florida Southwestern 17, Salt Lake 6: Consistent scoring helped Florida Southwestern earn the run-rule victory.
 
SLCC had early highlights, thanks to Allie Laub's RBI double in the second inning, but Florida Southwestern continued from there, scoring a run in each of the six innings. Salt Lake's defense also had four errors in the loss.
 
Allie Laub went 2-of-4 to lead SLCC.
