REGION 18 TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: SLCC hosts Region 18 Men’s-and-Women’s Basketball Tournaments

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 22, 2022) – Salt Lake Community College's Lifetime Activities Center will bustle with activity this week, thanks to the institution playing host to the entire Scenic West Athletic Conference.

SLCC will host this week's Region 18 Men's-and-Women's Basketball Championships, starting play on Wednesday and finishing play on Saturday. Along the way, the SLCC Women's Basketball team will open the tournament as the No. 2 seed on Wednesday, facing off against Community Christian. The No. 1 SLCC Men's Basketball program is the tournament's top seed, which means SLCC will await its opponent with a bye Thursday.

Men's Basketball: A bump in the road last week did not stop the No. 1 Bruins from gaining the top seed in this week's Region 18 tournament.

SLCC will put its undefeated home record on display throughout the week, preparing for a game against the winner of a first-round matchup between Southern Nevada and USU Eastern. The Bruins are undefeated against both teams, sitting at 29-1 overall.

Salt Lake coach Kyle Taylor said his team is prepared for the grind of the postseason.

"The key is to have a good week of practice, with some rest mixed in so our guys are fresh and fired up to play," he said. "The second key to success is to take it one game at a time. You have to win to advance, so you can't look ahead; one game, one opponent at a time. It will be difficult to beat a team four times in one season, but we'll need to try and do that no matter who we play."

While being the top seed in the tournament certainly has its perks, Taylor said his team also needs to understand the challenges of their position.

"I like where we sit in the Region 18 tournament, but every game is hard from this point on," he said. "All the teams we will play are good, talented and have had successful seasons. Being the top seed and getting the Thursday bye is significant though because it's one less game than everyone else has to play. We have a lot to play for and a lot to prove after last week, so I think our guys are going to be locked in and focused."

Women's Basketball: After an adventurous run through the regular season, Salt Lake will enter this week's Region 18 tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Salt Lake will open with Community Christian, who it defeated Monday with ease, then will turn attention towards a semifinal matchup with either Snow or Colorado Northwestern. Saturday's championship game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Bruins coach Marcilina Grayer said her team is ready for the postseason, after facing so much adversity throughout the regular season.

"For the region tournament we are focused on being more consistent for a full game and not taking any quarters off," she said. "We have yet to do that this season."

After finishing as the league runner-up to Southern Idaho, Grayer said the No. 2 seed leaves Salt Lake with much to work towards in the tournament.

"Of course, we would of much rather be the first seed and SWAC champions, as does every team in the conference, but we are happy with the No. 2 seed," she said. "We are looking forward to a great competitive tournament."
