This Week in SLCC Athletics – Week of December 5, 2022

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (December 5, 2022) – The Salt Lake Community College Athletic Department will see multiple 'starts' this week.

SLCC's nationally ranked Men's-and-Women's Basketball programs will start Scenic West Athletic Conference play this weekend, while the SLCC Indoor Track-and-Field program will open their season. SLCC Men's Basketball is still at No. 2 in the country, while SLCC Women's Basketball is up to No. 10 in the latest NJCAA rankings.

Indoor Track-and-Field: The start of the season for the Salt Lake Community College Indoor Track-and-Field program comes this weekend at BYU.

After a successful foray into the NJCAA Cross Country world, SLCC will commence indoor competition in the BYU December Invitational. The Bruins will compete in the meet, largely competing against in-state NCAA programs.

SLCC coach Isaac Wood said he is looking forward to his team getting a qualify measuring stick to start the season.

Men's Basketball: The SLCC Men's Basketball team has had an ideal start to the 2022-23 season, posting an 8-0 record in the preseason.

Stakes will go up for the Bruins this week as they open Scenic West play, particularly with SLCC opening league play at No. 13 Snow College on Wednesday. Salt Lake will also play at USU Eastern on Saturday.

Bruins coach Kyle Taylor said his team is looking forward to the challenge of opening league play.

"We play two very good opponents this week," he said. "Snow is big, physical and talented; USU Eastern is experienced, disciplined, and plays that tough zone that they are very good at. Snow and USU Eastern will present different challenges and really push us in different ways. We have our hands full this week."

After Salt Lake's sterling start to the league season, it would be easy to think the Bruins would simply romp their way through the start of league play. However, in Taylor's mind, the focus of preparation for league games is significantly different.

"In conference play, the stakes are just higher," he noted. "People scout better, everyone knows everyone else's personnel better, coaches know sets better; it's just harder to score, harder to execute. Games are physical, and every possession is important."

Women's Basketball: The SLCC Women's Basketball team entered the 2022-23 season with the goal of starting strong, and did that goal ever come to fruition.

SLCC is 8-0 after an impressive preseason and is now up to No. 10 in the latest NJCAA polls. As the Bruins open Scenic West Athletic Conference play on the road this week, SLCC coach Marcilina Grayer noted the overall positivity around her program.

"League play brings a sense of pressure and urgency that non-conference does not have the ability to do," she said. "It's 'Go Time' now."
