Cross Country: The effort and focus of the SLCC Cross Country programs will be squarely on national competition this week.
SLCC will run in Saturday's NJCAA national meet in Tallahassee, Florida, with the meet being hosted by Tallahassee Community College. The Bruins will be considered national contenders in both the Men's-and-Women's competition, fanning the flames of excitement around the Salt Lake program.
"We are excited for the national championships the Saturday," said SLCC coach
Isaac Wood. "For me personally, I was a graduate assistant coach for Florida State and I really love and appreciate the course we're racing. We are excited to put a punctuation mark at the end of our season and to set the standard for what these teams will be doing from here on out at our very first national championship event."
SLCC will commence with NJCAA Indoor Track-and-Field participation in a manner of weeks.
Men's Basketball: The No. 5 SLCC Men's Basketball program did exactly what it needed to last weekend, earning a strong home win to open the year.
Salt Lake will receive its first road test this upcoming weekend, with the Bruins traveling to Colorado to face off against Northeastern Junior College on Friday, and North Platte College on Saturday. Both programs present a qualify challenge for SLCC, especially in response to a 97-74 win over Casper College to start the season.
"This week we have two tough opponents," said Bruins coach
Kyle Taylor. "Both of this upcoming weekend's opponents got off to great starts the first week of the season and had quality wins. Both are tough, blue-collar teams that are going to compete and give you their best shot all game. We need to be ready as we travel out to Colorado, because it's going to be two challenging games against quality, disciplined opponents."
Looking back at last weekend's dominant win over Casper College, Taylor noted there was much to clean up. However, one statistic – rebounding – caught his eye as an area of strength for the Bruins.
"A pleasant surprise from last week was how well we rebounded the ball, which was good to see," he said. "We did not rebound it well in the preseason and had been really emphasizing that, so that was good to see. We get complacent too easily in the game, especially when we jump on an opponent, so we need to continue to fix that as we move forward."
