No. 1 SLCC Softball claims Region 18 title, advances to NJCAA tourney in Yuma

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 13, 2021) - In the course of a season in college sports, there is an ebb-and-flow and occasionally, there is also an exclamation point that helps define a season.

Thursday was an exclamation point for the No. 1 Salt Lake Community College softball team, with the Bruins earning an 8-0 win over the College of Southern Idaho to claim the Region 18 tournament and advance to the upcoming NJCAA National Tournament in Arizona. SLCC is now 51-2 overall with the win and will head into the national tournament as the likely top seed.

The Bruins posted a pair of runs early, with Rylee Harris-Thorpe hitting an RBI double to get Salt Lake on the board in the first inning. SLCC added five runs in the third inning, thanks to a Kaytlyn Cripps two-run double that upped the Bruin lead to 7-0 after three innings. Harris-Thorpe added an exclamation point on the championship game in the fourth inning, hitting a solo home run.

SLCC pitcher Nya Laing set the tone for Bruins dominance early in the game, pitching a shutout victory that featured six strikeouts. Harris-Thorpe went 2-of-3 at the plate, posting a pair of RBI's and scoring three runs. Cripps also posted a pair of RBI's.

Salt Lake will now await the announcement of the tournament field for the NJCAA National Tournament. The tourney, which was long hosted in St. George, will be played in Yuma, Ariz., with a scheduled start of May 25.
