Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 19, 2021) - The No. 6 Salt Lake Community College softball team opened a preseason tournament in Las Vegas with a great deal of momentum Friday.
Playing in the College of Southern Nevada-hosted 'SWAC Preseason Tournament', the Bruins swept through the College of Southern Idaho - 11-0 - and Colorado Northwestern Community College - 9-0. The wins boost Salt Lake to 7-0.
The Bruins will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's competition will begin with a 9:00 a.m. game against the College of Southern Nevada, followed up by a 11:00 a.m. matchup with the College of Southern Idaho.
Salt Lake 11, Southern Idaho 0: A 10-run fifth inning helped the Bruins power to a run-rule victory in the day's first game.
Holding a tight 1-0 lead entering the fifth inning, SLCC utilized
Rylee Harris-Thorpe and two extra-base hits that sent her and the Bruins to the win. First, Harris-Thorpe added to the advantage with an RBI double that extended the lead to 2-0; then, after the Bruins had batted through the lineup, Harris-Thorpe hit a two-run home run to close out the inning.
Harris-Thorpe finished 2-of-3 at the plate with a trio of RBI's, while
Rylie Bennett also finished with three RBI's on a 2-of-4 day. Salt Lake had eight players earn hits in the game, with five hitters earning extra-base hits.
Nya Laing earned a complete-game victory, throwing five inning while allowing no runs and striking out eight CSI batters.Â
Salt Lake 9, Colorado Northwestern 0: A strong start led to another run-rule victory for Salt Lake.
The Bruins started hot in the first inning, jumping out to a 4-0 lead on a
Reece Tahbo double. A Riley Harris-Thorpe home run led off the fourth inning to boost the Bruins to a 7-0 lead, with SLCC scoring later on a
Kaylee Pierce RBI triple.
Harris-Thorpe finished 2-of-2 with a pair of RBI's, while
Josee Haycock and Tahbo both went 2-of-3 at the plate.
Alyssa Millemon and Bailey Frischknect combined to allow one hit in the pitchers' circle, striking out 10 CNCC batters.Â
