Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 30, 2021) - The No. 16 Salt Lake Community College softball team closed out a Southern Nevada tournament with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
The Bruins earned a 15-11 win in a non-conference win over Scenic West Athletic Conference rival USU Eastern, followed up by a 12-5 win over Arizona Western College. The wins boost SLCC's overall record to 4-0.
Salt Lake will return to the field for the SWAC Preseason Tournament the weekend of February 19 in Las Vegas.
Salt Lake 15, USU Eastern 11: A slow start gave way to massive comeback for Salt Lake, with the Bruins scoring nine runs in the sixth inning to earn the victory.
SLCC trailed 11-2 after the top of the fourth inning, with USU Eastern controlling the tempo of the game. Salt Lake posted three runs in the bottom of the inning, followed by a run in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 11-6. Salt Lake loaded the bases with singles and walks in the sixth inning, with an untimely USU Eastern error allowing both
Savanna Montoya and
Mercedes Call to score to start the SLCC momentum. Hola Nakayam scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded RBI walk.
Savannah Heaton led Salt Lake at the plate, finished 2-of-3 with a trio of RBI's.
Salt Lake 12, Arizona Western 5: A big fourth inning for the Bruins added to an early lead as Salt Lake glided to the victory.
Tied at 4-4 entering the top of the fourth inning, SLCC posted six runs in the inning to take a lead they would never relinquish. A three-run home run from
Rylee Harris-Thorpe played a strong role in the inning, along with a
Bailee Noland two-run home run.
Harris-Thorpe had a 3-of-4 performance at the plate for Salt Lake, plating six RBI's while also scoring three runs herself. Bailey Frischnecht earned the pitching victory, finishing with five strikeouts in four innings of work.Â
