TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 4, 2020) - The No. 5 Salt Lake Community College softball program fared well in its season-opening tournament in Southern Nevada, going 4-1 against some of the best programs in the southwestern United States.
Now SLCC will travel to the southeastern U.S. to play some of the top junior college programs in that region in a tournament in Dothan, Alabama. The tournament will see Salt Lake seven games before taking an extended break before the beginning of Scenic West Athletic Conference play at the end of month, giving the Bruins a chance to make their final mark in the non-conference season.
Looking back at last weekend's 4-1 record, SLCC coach
Cyndee Bennett said her team showed its abilities in the strong showing in Las Vegas.
"We had a good first weekend out," she said. :There was a lot of opportunity to learn and grow. I am very excited about some individual performances, including
Mercedes Call."
Salt Lake will open the tournament with games against preseason No. 1 Chipola and Northwest Florida State on Thursday, followed up by games against Lakeland College and No. 2 Florida SouthWestern State on Friday. SLCC will also play No. 6 Central Florida on Friday. Saturday's games will be played against Central Alabama Community College and Gulf Coast State College.
Bennett said this weekend's games will provide a strong challenge for her team.
"We are turning right around and heading to Alabama this week to play the reigning NJCAA champions Chipola," she said.Â
Salt Lake will open Scenic West Athletic conference play on February 28 against Colorado Northwestern Community College on the road.Â
