Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 1, 2020) – A night after a heartbreaking loss, the No. 5 Salt Lake Community College softball team responded in style to close out a tournament Saturday.

The Bruins, playing in a tournament hosted by the College of Southern Nevada, earned an 8-1 win over Arizona Western and an 11-2Â win over Central Arizona. The wins boost Salt Lake's overall record to 4-1 to open the season.

SLCC will take off for a seven-game tournament in Florida beginning Thursday.

Salt Lake 8, Arizona Western 1: The Bruins opened up the morning with an offensive showcase against Arizona Western.

SLCC took an early 1-0 lead, thanks to a
Brylee Marziale RBI single. Salt Lake added two more runs in the second inning, then took an 8-1 lead in the fourth inning with a
Mallory Barber two-RBI double contributing to the total.Â

Defensively, the Bruins kept up the pressure by taking home runs away from AWCÂ on over-the-fence catches. Nya Lang started the game, earning the win in the pitching circle.Â

Salt Lake 11, Central Arizona 2: Salt Lake came back to earn a doubleheader sweep against a longtime national power.

Trailing 1-0, SLCC's
Mallory Barber lead off with a standup double, eventually scoring on a
Mercedes Call RBI double. The Bruins boosted the lead in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice that scored
Mia Cullimore.Â
Salt Lake posted four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, with two RBI doubles helping score runs in the sixth inning. Marziale also hit a home run during the scoring streak.Â
Barber went 2-of-4 at the plate, finishing with a pair of doubles. Marziale also earned the pitching win, throwing 6.2 innings while allowing just 2 earned runs.Â
