No. 6 SLCC Softball excited to host Region 18 championships

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 7, 2019) - In preseason season meetings, the No. 6 Salt Lake Community College softball team set a goal of returning to dominance in the 2019 season.

The Bruins accomplished that goal in a big way, running to a 44-6 overall record and a mark of 36-4 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference to earn the SWAC regular-season title. Salt Lake ended the season on a 23-game winning streak, going a perfect 20-0 at Norma Carr Field in Taylorsville. All of those statistics are important when combined as SLCC will welcome in the entire Scenic West for this week's Region 18 championships.

The tournament, which is scheduled to begin Wednesday, will feature the Bruins trying to regain the crown after several years of dominance. Salt Lake finished a full nine-games ahead of second-place Southern Idaho, setting themselves up as the top seed in the tourney.

Bruins coach Cyndee Bennett said her program is excited to host the entire region in competition throughout the week at Norma Carr Field.

"It's always a great honor to be able to host the region tournament," she said. "Our players have worked very hard for this opportunity and we're looking forward to welcoming the region for what will hopefully be a terrific tournament experience."

The tournament will start at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday as Colorado Northwestern and USU Eastern try to play into a matchup with Salt Lake at 1:30 p.m. The winner of that game will then advance into Thursday's semifinals. Southern Idaho and Snow College will play in the 4:00 p.m. game in the afternoon. The winners' bracket semifinals are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Salt Lake fared well against both Colorado Northwestern and USU Eastern throughout the season, sweeping both programs. SLCC outscored Colorado Northwestern by a margin of 109-10 during the course of the season. The Bruins ended the regular season with the Scenic West's top offense (10.14 runs-per-game and a batting average of .413) and pitching staff (2.60 ERA).

A day-by-day recap of the Region 18 championships will be available daily at scenicwestsports.com. The official website of the Scenic West will also have scores and an updated bracket throughout the tournament.
