TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 1, 2019) - The No. 7 Salt Lake Community College softball team may have accomplished its goal of winning the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular-season championship last week but that doesn't mean the Bruins are done getting better.
Far from resting on their laurels, SLCC will welcome in another opponent into Norma Carr Field this weekend, opening the door for the College of Southern Nevada in the regular-season finale. The Bruins have already clinched the opportunity to host next weekend's Region 18 championships but the team is still grinding away towards entering the postseason on a high note.
Salt Lake coach
Cyndee Bennett said the team is focused on playing well against a quality Southern Nevada team.
"Our program wants to have a solid weekend heading into next weekend's Region championships," she said. "We're fortunate to be playing a quality opponent this weekend who will test us and continue to help us stay sharp as we strive to finish the regular-season playing our best."
The Bruins are currently on the longest winning streak in the Scenic West, having won 19-consecutive games. Coincidentally, Salt Lake's last loss came in the series opener against Southern Nevada in Henderson back in March. The momentum SLCC currently has is making noise around the league as the Bruins lead the Scenic West in team batting average (.414) and ERA (3.53). Salt Lake has a full nine-game lead on second-place Southern Idaho.
Besides earning team honors, SLCC also continues to earn individual honors. Monday, the Scenic West announced that SLCC'sÂ
Arienn Ackerman was named the league's Player-of-the-Week for her success in the series against Snow. Ackerman's selection makes it three straight weeks that Salt Lake has won player honors from the league's coaches. A sophomore from Las Vegas, Ackerman went 5-of-5 at the plate last weekend and had seven RBI's and one home run. Salt Lake's offense produced 46 runs in four games.
Southern Nevada enters this weekend's matchup on a three-game losing streak after getting run-ruled in the last two games of a series against USU Eastern. The Coyotes are just 14-18 in Scenic West play and will be ineligible for the Region 18 championships next weekend.
Besides finishing the regular-season, SLCC will honor its sophomores on Saturday during "Sophomore Day." The honorees will include:
Paige Reynolds,
Dayna Hokanson,
Taylor Sorenson,
Kiara Grover,
Kierstyn Ketchell,
Arienn Ackerman,
Summer Stensgard,
Whitnee Alexander,
Kim Taylor, and
Breah Ava.Â
Salt Lake and Southern Nevada will play a four-game series on Friday and Saturday at Norma Carr Field. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12:00 p.m. Live stats for the series will be available at www.slccbruins.com.Â
