No. 12 SLCC Softball set for Colorado Northwestern series this weekend

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 3, 2019) - The No. 12 Salt Lake Community College softball team rebounded quickly after dropping a series-opener at the College of Southern Nevada, turning on the offense to beat the Coyotes the rest of the way.

The momentum from SLCC's 3-1 series victory will carry the Bruins into another Scenic West Athletic Conference series this weekend against Colorado Northwestern Community College. Salt Lake will travel to play CNCC in a four-game series with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, an opportunity for Salt Lake to maintain its two-game lead in the conference standings.

Heading into the weekend, SLCC coach Cyndee Bennett said her team is focused on continuing to build their skills as the second round of league play begins.

"I am happy with where we stand," she said. "We have learned a lot and have had a lot of growth as a team. I look forward to the second half."

Salt Lake leads the Scenic West with a 16-4 record, with second-place Southern Idaho sitting with a 14-6 record. SLCC continues to lead the league in both hitting (.397 average) and pitching (a team ERA of 3.12). The Bruins also have a continued streak of Scenic West weekly award winners as Tarni Stepto leads the Scenic West with a .514 batting average and a league-high 9 home runs.

While the Bruins are flying high, Colorado Northwestern has had its share of ups-and-downs throughout the season with a record of just 2-14 in the Scenic West. The Spartans are on a nine-game losing streak and won their only Scenic West games against the College of Southern Nevada in March. In their previous matchups this season, Salt Lake swept a four-game series with CNCC by the combined score of 50-9.

Salt Lake and Colorado Northwestern's four-game series will start in Rangely, Colo. on Friday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. SLCC will return home on April 12 for a series against the College of Southern Idaho.
