Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 27, 2019) - Weather may have affected the No. 7 Salt Lake Community College softball team on Saturday, affecting the program's ability to conclude a doubleheader on Friday against Snow College.
The way SLCC is playing right now, nothing will stop the Bruins as Salt Lake finished up game two of the series with a dominant 9-1 performance in the morning by sweeping the afternoon's games with victories of 9-7 and 20-2. The wins push Salt Lake's overall record to 40-6 and 32-4 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Salt Lake will play its final series of the regular season at Norma Carr Field next weekend, hosting the College of Southern Nevada. By virtue of this weekend's performance, the Bruins have also clinched the right to host the Region 18 championships in Taylorsville from May 8-10.
Salt Lake 9, Snow College 7: A back-and-forth contest ended in a close Salt Lake victory.
After three scoreless innings from both sides, Snow posted three runs in the fourth inning to open the scoring. Salt Lake responded with four runs in the bottom frame of the inning thanks to a
Whitnee Alexander three-run home run. The Bruins stretched their lead to 5-3 with a
Tarni Stepto home run in the fifth inning.Â
Snow retook the lead in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to take a 7-5 lead. Once again though, it was the Bruins who responded with a
Paige Reynolds two-run single tying the game.
Mallory Barber and Stepto also had RBI singles in the inning to help Salt Lake to the win.
Stepto led the Bruins offensively with a 3-of-4 performance. Reynolds,
Savanna Montoya and
Kim Taylor also had multi-hit games.
Mia Cullimore earned the pitching victory in relief.
Salt Lake 20, Snow College 2: Extra-base hits ruled the day in the run-rule victory that finished off the series sweep.
The Bruins hit four home runs and had seven extra-base hits in total in the dominating win. Home runs by
Tarni Stepto and
Arienn Ackerman gave SLCC a 5-1 lead in the first inning, a lead extended to 7-1 after the second inning. Salt Lake scored 13 runs in the fourth inning, keyed off a
Mallory Barber grand-slam home run and a two-run
Mia Cullimore home run.
Barber owned the game, going 4-of-4 at the plate with 5 RBI's. Ackerman went 3-of-3 at the plate with 4 RBI's and Cullimore went 2-of-2 with 4 RBI's. Besides going 1-of-2 at the plate with 3 RBI's, Stepto also earned the pitching victory with a five-inning, five strikeout performance.Â
