No. 7 SLCC Softball prepared to begin final homestand

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 24, 2019) - Consider one box of the 2019 season checked in the goal column of the No. 7 Salt Lake Community College softball team.

The Bruins reclaimed the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular-season title in a four-game sweep of in-state rival USU Eastern last weekend, blasting their way back to the top of the league. While Salt Lake will be able to enjoy the fruits of that contest in a few weeks time, the Bruins must first successfully maintain their momentum and navigate through the final two weeks of the season. That navigation will begin this weekend as SLCC hosts another in-state program - Snow College - in a four-game series at Norma Carr Field.

While the entire SLCC program is excited about clinching the Scenic West's top spot, Bruins coach Cyndee Bennett said her players can't be satisfied with what they have already accomplished.

"We are excited to finish up our season at home," she said. "Snow has a very good team this year and we need to stay focused in order to reach our goals."

Salt Lake looks like a juggernaut at the moment, entering the Snow College series on a 15-game winning streak that started a weekend after the Bruins took a 3-1 record home from Ephraim. Since then, SLCC has claimed the Scenic West's top batting average (.411) and ERA (2.75) on the way to doubling the win percentage of half the Scenic West.

Additionally, the Bruins continue to earn individual honors from the league coaches as pitcher Tarni Stepto was honored with the Scenic West Pitcher-of-the-Week award on Monday. Stepto had an outstanding overall weekend but shined particularly brightly in the pitching circle. She pitched 12 innings with an ERA of 0.58, allowing just 12 baserunners while striking out 21 batters. USU Eastern's batting average against Stepto was .122.

Times may be good for Salt Lake but Snow has had a much more up-and-down year. The Badgers are 15-12 in Scenic West play, coming off a 3-1 series over the College of Southern Idaho. In their first matchup this season, Salt Lake went 3-1 against Snow, earning three close victories and a run-rule decision in the series finale.

Salt Lake and Snow will play doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday at Norma Carr Field. The in-state rivals will play at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
