No. 8 SLCC Softball finishes off doubleheader sweep over USU Eastern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 20, 2019) - The No. 8 Salt Lake Community College softball team has played its way into contention for the Scenic West Athletic Conference title through a season of consistency.

Now the Bruins are just two weekends away from officially being named champions as Salt Lake maintained its eight-game lead in the Scenic West standings with just eight games remaining, thanks to a Saturday doubleheader sweep of in-state rival USU Eastern. The Bruins earned a 9-7 win in game one and a 9-0 win in game two, upping their record in the Scenic West to 28-4. SLCC's overall record is 36-6.

Salt Lake will return home to face off against Snow College in a four-game series at Norma Carr Field next weekend. The four-game series will be played with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Live stats for the series will be available at www.slccbruins.com.

Salt Lake 9, USU Eastern 7: A back-and-forth contest ended in a Salt Lake victory in game three of the series.

Savanna Montoya's RBI single helped Salt Lake get on the board with a 1-0 lead in the second inning, a lead the Bruins would add to consistently. Tied at 1-1 in the fourth inning, Mallory Barber reached on an error and helped score two runs for SLCC that eventually turned into a 4-1 lead.

USU Eastern would take a brief lead in the sixth inning after scoring five runs, leading 6-4. However, the Bruins responded with five runs of their own in the seventh inning, with a Dayna Hokanson RBI single helping to even the score. Then, with runners on, Mallory Barber had an RBI sacrifice-fly to break the tie and send the Bruins to the win.

Kiara Grover started the matchup in the circle for the Bruins, keeping Salt Lake within striking distance until late.

Salt Lake 9, USU Eastern 0: After a close, come-from-behind victory in game three, SLCC removed all doubt by earning a run-rule victory in the series finale.

The Bruins struck early as Breah Ava hit a two-run home run early to give Salt Lake a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. With Tarni Stepto dealing in the circle, Salt Lake's offense posted another big hit in the fourth inning as Mia Cullimore hit a two-run home run to give her team a 3-0 lead. Ava hit another home run - this time of the three-run variety - in the fifth inning and Mallory Barber eventually hit a bases-loaded double that scored three runs.

Stepto earned the pitching win for SLCC, striking out 13 Eagles in five innings that included no hits and no runs.
